Bounded by 18th Street and Colombia Road, Adams Morgan is one of the most unique neighborhoods in Washington, DC. Its residents are the neighborhood's greatest asset. Steeped in cultural diversity, Adams Morgan is layered with historic architecture inspired by a sense of cultural vibrancy and community pride. Significant observations, such as the strong commercial core, access to public transportation, neighborhood walkability, and engaged residents, define the Adams Morgan community.
The diversity in Adams Morgan is the first observation I made as to the ethnicity of the residents, and culture describes the neighborhood's identity. As a significant individual asset, the different cultural practices, and international cuisines I observed in Adams Morgan stand out. In its structure, the neighborhood retains an artistic identity with the existence of sculptures and public murals such as the mural in Alley near 2421 18th Street. Also, institutions such as the Sitar Arts Center, DC Arts centers, and the Incarnation Church are observations that significantly contribute to the art scene in the Adams Morgan community.
Further, the observation of different housing types ranging from rowhouses to apartment buildings and commercially zoned areas along Colombia Road, Florida Avenue, and 18th street, are an indication of architectural richness in the community. Each of the neighborhoods like the Lanier Heights and Washington Heights have their own character, which describes the diversity in the community. Within the community spaces, almost 100% of neighborhood housing is within a five-minute walk to a playground.
Inclusion in Adams Morgan community is evident with both locally and regionally relevant service-oriented cultural organizations that serve as avenues for inclusivity. For instance, this has been championed by community assets promoting connectivity in the community with Rock Creek Park and other local recreational centers and parks. Sites like Kalorama Park, Marie Reed Sports Fields, Cliff Bourne Place, and the Public Plaza at Columbia Road and Calvert Street are a good representation of diversity and amenities promoting community engagement. Moreover, observations of community assets like restaurants (such as Smoke and Barrel, Mint wood Place, the Roofers Union, The Diner, Lapis Bistro, Mellow Mushroom, McDonald's, Burger King, among others), international shops, and businesses contribute to the identity of the neighborhood.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Adams Morgan engaged and progressive culture is evident in the community with a central connection as the residents enjoy the dual advantages of a close-in setting to downtown. The neighborhood can be assessed through bike lanes, car share, Capital Bikeshare, Metrobus, DC Circulator, and Metrorail as well. The different observations, including the physical setup of Adams Morgan and the practices of the residents, reflect the diversity and inclusivity in the community.
