Introduction
Diversity in culture is a topic that cannot be escaped as every day human beings interactions revolves around persons of and from a different cultural background. A good example, in this case, is the typical classroom setting. It is undeniable that people communicate and interact differently and these aspects are influenced by diversity in single origin. Respect of other person's culture and ethnicity can only begin by enlightening ourselves about the individuality of one's cultural and ethnic background. By understanding one self-one create room to understand others.
Objectives of the project
The proposed project aims to learn more facts about my culture and origin, familiarizing myself with the pros and cons of my ethnicity. To achieve this, I want first to examine my family lineage from where I stand going back to my ancestry. Having come from a patriarchal community, the family lineage that will be of interest is that of my father's side. Therefore, I will provide a family tree that dates backs furthest as I can investigate. Second I will examine the naming system used in my family lineage some of the facts I want to know are : why are children named in a certain way in my genealogy, who chooses this names ethnically, what are the likely cultural misfits likely to occur in case one fails to follow the cultural naming laws and order. The third is to examine under what ethnic group my family lineage lie and why. Looking around, I realized people have different ethnicity and probably a reason in cultural diversity. Understanding my cultural ethnicity will give me a chance to cross-examine my culture and that of others, identifying similarities and differences that exist. Ability to differentiate the difference provides room for one to understand why others behave and act different and overly learning to accept and respect the differences.
Background information
Coming from a patriarchal lineage, I realized my father has more power and say in the family. My father being the primary family breadwinner is in control of most house decision. He believes he is the leader and having lived intimately with my grandparent my grandfather has similar power as my dad. From the stories I have gathered from my family, men are the heads of the house while women role is to keep the house in order by meeting all house chore. Although in my home such typical rules don't exist due to modernism and social changes all influenced by time, my father stands out as a leader while my mother often is doing house chores. My dad is in control of what school we attend what car we drive, and he works hard to sustain us as a family. My grandfather also did the same for his family, and even today he is always consulted for so many family decision.
Traditionally the ethnic community from which my family falls, women and men roles were different, and men were the heads of the community and family. Women remained at homes as clearness and food makers the men were out in the fields farming, hunting, and fishing. Boys were expected to follow in their father's footsteps, and so were the women. Examining my father and grandfather character, I understand why there is a similarity in the way they do the family thing and make decisions. Back in the ages when my grandfather was young, education was qualified for men. Although classroom education was not present like today men were enrolled for apprentice courses, music, and wrestling classes. A good example, my grandmother though not related to my grandfather however shared a common ethnicity, is not educated like my grandfather. My grandmother, however, is skilled in cooking and housekeeping those were the essential roles passed down by her mother to her.
Methodology applied
To collect information, I will use qualitative research approaches. The qualitative research approach is more exploratory since this is project seeks to explore past details then I will have to examine people and use already existing fact to back up my research.
For qualitative research, I will examine past researched work and literature about my culture. I will also visit a museum to see some of the art, pictures, and artifacts present today of my cultural. I will interview with six elderly persons, my grandfather, and two other senior men and my grandmother and two other senior women all from my cultural background. The interviews with each of these elderly persons will be taped and recorded for future reference and use.
Discussion and conclusion
After collecting all the information, each data will be evaluated showing its strengths and weakness. The findings will be discussed and a summary given. Pictures and interview collected will be attached in the appendix section. Literature used to acquire social data will be attached in the reference page.
