Introduction
Disruptive technology refers to an innovation that considerably modifies the working mechanism of an organization or a consumer. These disruptive technologies are characterized by different forms such as the internet of things, artificial intelligence, robots, big data, and automation. Due to the increasing market demand and the fast-growing world of technology, various organizations in different fields have been forced to adapt to disruptive technology to meet the market requirements. The aviation industry is one of the industries making very use of this disruptive technology. Thus, this essay will aim at discussing how the use of various disruptive technology such as automation, artificial intelligence, big data, and the Internet of things could manage a crisis in the aviation industry.
Automation
Automation involves the use of a control system and information technology to reduce the need for human intervention. The automation technology has vividly been utilized in aviation crisis management. This crisis management may be in the form of mechanical management or crisis related to difficulties in communication between the crew and the individual on the render. Some of the automation technologies in aviation include:
Developing Robust Predictive Aircraft Maintenance
The automation technology enables the preventive maintenance system of an aircraft to generate a list of the pending items that need to be fixed thus enhancing the prevention of the next failures that could result in issues that may affect the aircraft dispatch (Rosa et al, 2017). From the ground statistical analysis, the collected message from the fleet of aircraft obtained through automation is used for starting a prevention maintenance mechanism. Comparing the automation technology used in the modern aircraft to the manual method consisting of engines with limited sensing capability, the technology proves to be less economical since little or no much human monitoring is needed. Also, the automation technology ensures less destruction of an aircraft since it is able to detect any aircraft mechanical issue earlier before much destruction occurs.
Real-Time Human Performance Monitoring
This technology has mostly been adopted in the aviation industry to increase safety in the operation related to the human factor. The technology operates through sensing, storing, interpreting, and communicating the gathered information concerning the surrounding of an aircraft while on the move. For instance, Air New Zealand uses wearable devices in tracking children who are not accompanied by short and long destination flights. Generally, the incorporation of automation technology in aviation proves to be an advantage since the entire process has enhanced smooth management and monitoring in the industry. Trough developing a more reliable human performance and reducing costs related to manual detections such as manual sensors. However, the technology also has some disadvantages such as in case of failure, it may lead to mass losses in case there is no backup mechanism.
Artificial Intelligence
Due to the overwhelming conditions in airports such as the increased number of travellers, mass transportation of luggage, and incising crime rate, the use of AI has for a large part been utilized in the aviation industry to ensure the situation is contained and security in the airport is maintained. The AI technology has continued to be considered as the most efficient mechanism for automating the travellers checking process. The AI technology has also helped in managing the aviation crisis created by a large number of travellers whereby the system creates virtual assistance for customers’ queries that helps in reducing the commotion. Further, the utilization of AI technology in the airport has considered has very efficient in managing security issues. For instance, AI technology has been employed by the Delta Airline whereby the company has installed digital cameras with facial recognition technology which helps in identifying the passengers while checking in (Sejuti, 2020). Other than the travellers checking, AI has also been utilized in managing the aviation crisis associated with luggage screening whereby the AI technology has made it easier for the security personnel to monitor the safety condition of the luggage passing by as well as fastening the entire screening exercise. Generally, the utilization of artificial intelligence in better managing the aviation crisis has constituted to many advantages in the industry such as increased security, reducing the time of customer service, and also reduced the cost of operation. However, the technology could also be a disadvantage to the aviation industry whereby AI technology is too costly to implement, and also through the use of AI the industry may not be in a position to come up with new innovations.
Big Data
Big data involves a combination of three sets of data (structured, semistructured, and unstructured) that is collected by an institution by use of an AI system that can be used for the mining of information that can be analysed to determine the status and trend of an organization. The move by the aviation industry to shift into using big data in their management would highly transform the way the aviation industry does business. Various airline industries have for the past few years shifted to this technology. For instance, Boeing 787 has been established to create half a terabyte of data to every flight regarding its operation (Carlota, 2018). Thus through combining various airline data such as ticket information, customer service, weather forecasting as well as airport communication would enhance the response to customer demand and market trend forming some of the advantages of adapting to big data technology. However, on the other hand, big data may have some disadvantages such as prune to manipulation which may render a company into a loss.
Internet of Things (IoT)
With the expandable rate of network connection, the rate of internet connection has continued to enlarge. This has mainly been facilitated by the organization's desire to strengthen its management. The aviation industry has also not been left back in the implementation of internet technology. This technology has greatly boosted the aviation crises related to management such as the improvement of passage experience, handling of baggage, and tracking of aircraft in transit. For instance, in 2015 MIAM Airport introduced an IoT application that facilitated a connection with the increasing number of customers over the internet (Bruce, 2016). The utilization of IoT technology has proved to be of advantage to the aviation industry whereby the technology has enhanced aviation management processes through quick service delivery and easer communication with the customers. However, IoT may have some disadvantages in the aviation industry such as risk to cyber-attacks which may lead to loss of information.
Conclusion
Based on the discussion on how disruptive technology could be used in better managing aviation crises, it is quite clear, the technology has served a bigger role in general management of the aviation industry. The utilization of disruptive technology such as artificial intelligence and IoT the management of aviation crisis such a security and customer service has been enhanced as demonstrated by various aviation companies such as Miami Airport and Delta Airline. Further, the utilization of automation technology in the aviation industry has been established to serve a greater role in boosting task management such as monitoring of human real-time performance without human intervention. While other disruptive technologies such as big data have been established to assist aviation management through analysis of collected data to determine the status trend of the industry thus making disruptive technology worth to be adopted in managing crises in aviation.
