Summary of the video and key parts that stood most out.
Having watched the 'BBC Documentary Panorama Behind Closed Doors Elderly Care Exposed,' it is evident that the video has the purpose of pointing out the unethical and immoral practices that go on within elderly care homes. The video basically focuses on the ill-treatment and neglection of the elderly, who are in fact the most vulnerable human beings. The video mainly brings into light the types of abuse that the elderly go through.
The key parts that stood most out to me are the frequency of abuse and neglect, and the fact that managers are less concerned about the reports made.
How to protect the elderly from abuse.
Protecting the elderly from abuse in elderly care homes can be almost impossible because it is hard to know exactly what goes on once you leave. However, one could use methods that could help them identify whether or not their relatives are content with the services in elderly homes. To begin with, I would advise my friend to admit her grandmother in an elderly home that is highly recommended by many people and has a good reputation. Despite the fact that this does not completely eliminate the chances of abuse, it will minimize them, which is a good thing. In addition to that, monitoring her grandmother through the installation os a secret camera and also monitor the change in personality and behavior of her grandmother while she visits her. Despite the use of hidden cameras being highly discouraged, the video clearly depicts it as an effective preventive measure against abuse. With relation to personality and behavior, she should ask her questions like whether she is happy or if she is treated right. As seen in the video, the victims of elderly abuse point out that they are not happy when they are abused. This would, therefore, enable her to prevent her grandmother from abuse in advance, or stop future chances of being abused.
Three key concepts in the video.
The three key concepts in the video include elder abuse and neglection (passive and active neglection). To begin with, elder abuse is depicted in the video considering the fact that intentionally cause harm to the elderly through physical assault and emotional abuse. This is clearly illustrated in the case where a caregiver is seen assaulting an elderly by not handling her gently. In another instance, the caregivers who attended to Ms. Yvonne grant abuse her by forcing her to walk to the toilet despite the fact that they already know that she cannot walk. In addition to the elderly face neglect from the caregivers in a way that their personal care and basic needs are not provided. Due to low staffing and the high number of elderly patients, the caregivers passively neglect the elderly as sometimes they are occupied with other patients. In the video, it is brought up that sometimes the elderly ring their bells, but no one responds due to the fact that the caregivers are busy taking care of others. The elderly are also actively neglected as it is seen that sometimes the caregivers intentionally fail to provide their caregiving duties. This is depicted in instances where some elderly are left in beds that are soaked in urine. Sometimes the caregivers do not care about the needs of the elderly as seen in Ms. Yvonne Grant's case, she requests to be taken to the toilet, but the caregivers ignore her demands and insist that she should just use her pad. It is therefore evident that the major concerns in these elderly homes are the abuse and neglect of the elderly.
