I have a firm belief that the organization violated the right to privacy of Pettit. The background check is required for transforming education sector to be ethically affiliated, but the way the organization performed its search on Pettit was against the fundamental right to privacy. My indifference with the board of education lies in the fact that the organization decided to fire Pettit. Irrespective of the fact that her lifestyle is questionable for most people who have been working in the educational sector, firing Pettit was not the most ethical decision that the board of directors could take upon her (Pettit v. State Board of Education, n. d.). In spite of the fact that there are ethical principles that constraint teachers to behave in a given manner, Pettit has the right to do what she like at her own time. Pettit used poor judgment since I believe that an individual ought to check on the manner by which they conduct themselves.
Reasons Whether Pettit's Behavior was Unprofessional or Immoral. And the Reason why is Fit or Unfit to Teach.
There is always the freedom to make choices away from the working area. For that matter, Pettit's actions are neither immoral nor unprofessional (McEvoy, 2005). The freedom to make decisions outside the working area provides grounds to the argument that Pettit was within her jurisdiction to act in her way. Also, it was Pettit's time. However, the period of 1960 was a different time as compared to the current society that has social changes. Various reviews of the case have portrayed that social modifications constraint Pettit's acts to the jurisdiction of one's personal life that is away from the workplace as a teacher (Pettit v. State Board of Education, n.d.). According to the professor who testified on the side of Pettit, it is clear that the professor had known Pettit personally and that her social actions were adjusted and she was made to suffer trauma and emotional turmoil due to the suspension that she was given. Her emotional turmoil proved that she was not going to repeat her mistakes and the offenses that she did according to the professional codes of education (McEvoy, 2005). According to the witnesses who were against the Pettit, it was outlined that the sexual misconduct prevents her from assuming her roles as a teacher in the field of education. She cannot be fit to offer the required direction as most of the learners are aware of her actions.
Indeed, the plaintiff does not fit to be in the educational sector as a teacher. The hearing outlined that the plaintiff has engaged in aspects of wife-swapping, sexual and oral copulation with men other than her wedded husband. Also, the plaintiff appeared on a TV program and showed facial disguise due to the nonconventional sexual misconduct that Pettit had engaged in. Even though Pettit is likely to refrain from her deeds, it is clear that she is unfit to teach due to the way she has tarnished her name as a teacher (Dyrbye et al., 2010). Teaching profession requires an individual to dedicate themselves with a clear set of behavior that is acceptable for professional support to the learners' social behavior and learning outcomes. The immoral turpitude and unfit acts that Pettit engaged in disqualify her from being fit for teaching since the unethical and unprofessional conduct that she did went viral to the point that questions her service as a teacher in any institution. Therefore, her diploma in education is subject to revocation due to the extent by which the society saw her behavior.
Excellent Performance in Classroom, Higher Moral Standards Outside Classroom and Its connection to her Fitness to Fit in Classroom.
Through the fundamental right to privacy, I believe that Pettit has a right to do whatever she likes so long as it does not offer distress to the population that she serves. Good and reputable classroom behavior is enough to provide the required role model for the learners in school. The main aim of educational goals is to generate individuals who are law-abiding to the set standards. Pettit was a great teacher. However, her actions during her own private time made her be on the spot for unfit behavior for a teacher. Since she is a performer in the classroom, Pettit can transfer to another social ground to offer her service as a teacher and maintain her private life as private as possible. Since my opinion lies on the fact that teachers need to portray good morals in and outside the educational ground and classroom environment, Pettit should not teach if she continues to represent her uncouth behavior to the public (Pettit v. State Board of Education, n. d.). The outcomes of crude behavior should not be left to be absorbed by young children. Educational goal is to shape the behavior of future adults thus Pettit needs to be socially considerate whenever she is carrying on her private life.
Analysis of Five Behaviors Which Show Unprofessional or Immoral Conduct in Teaching Profession and Teachers at Large
Teachers are required to reinforce the ability of learners. It is therefore immoral if a teacher negatively discusses a learner in front of their peers. Such acts demoralize the learner and make them feel incapacitated to act reasonably as their peers. Sexual sentiments should not be mentioned by a teacher in classroom. Sexual arousal is unprofessional and immoral for a teacher as it goes against the goals of education which is required to develop morally upright individuals. Also, a teacher should not make any sexual favors or behave as if they are focusing on sexual conversations with learners. Romantic relationships should be shunning by teachers to avoid confusing learners. Alcoholism and drugs use another immoral behavior that a teacher should not openly do. In most cases, learners view teachers as the overall role models. Teachers who show their recklessness in alcoholism and drug abuse destroy the grounds for teaching learners on the required ways to carry themselves in life (Dyrbye et al., 2010). Clothes that compromise the body of a teacher by revealing their body or too much skin is a behavior that tends to drive learners away from the required learning outcome. Wearing sexy and tight clothes is unprofessional and immoral for teaching profession. The fifth uncouth and improper conduct is driving for cheating. Teachers should avoid compromising the grading ethics and the actual grades that each student should portray.
