Introduction
Spirituality is the connection that people have in a supernatural being, the supernatural being influences the behavior and character of the person. The belief in supernatural being influences how people work, some belief in spirituality contradicts to what some professionals entail while other beliefs make the person complete their duties exclusively as required by profession. Nurses are social workers that provide care to the patients, some of the activities that they engage in contradict to the spirituality of the nurse while in other incidents the spirituality supports the nursing profession. Spirituality care is fundamental in healthcare; hence it influences the nursing profession. The paper discusses how spirituality affects the nursing profession.
Spirituality influences nurses depending on how the person is rooted in their religion. Some people do not have any spiritual connection; hence their activities in the nursing profession is not influenced by spirituality. Other nurses have a deep spiritual connection; therefore, the actions that they engage in are influenced by their spirituality. The influence might be either positive or negative. The belief either encourage the nurse to offer the best service to the patient or make the person avoid offering certain services since it against the belief of the nurse.
An article from the American Journal of nursing discuss various issues in spirituality that influences the nursing profession, the article puts these issues into perspective. Spirituality advocates for service to humanity where believers are encouraged to take care of the needy people in the society (Shawn, 2016). Taking care also includes the sick where they need attention from the people so that they can heal. Spirituality encourages the people that it their obligation to be concerned of their neighbors whenever they are in need, nursing also engages in taking care of the sick people. Nurses that have spiritual connection believe that their professionals are a service to humanity. This makes them serve their customers with a passion for fulfilling the spiritual obligation.
Spirituality is divided into different denominations; hence different denominations have different beliefs. Some of the faiths have influenced the way people view the nursing profession in such a way people regard nursing differently either positive or negative. For instance, faiths such as Hinduism encourage their members to serve other people in society by taking care of them (Shawn, 2016). Hindu nurses offer the best possible service to the patients because they know that doing so is following the wishes of the spiritual being. Nursing is very popular in areas where the Hindu religion is dominant because people are trying to meet the belief of taking care of the patients in the community. The Hindu religion has helped in the spread of the nursing profession hence improving the quality of services offered by nurses.
In other denominations such as Christianity where other denominations discourage the people from offering and obtaining services related to medical. The beliefs of the Jehovah's Witnesses, for instance, discourage their people from receiving services from health centers hence making the nursing profession look bad (Shawn, 2016). They believe that only God can heal a patient; hence there is no need for one seeking health services from a healthcare provider. The Jehovah's Witnesses denomination discourages its followers against becoming pursuing the nursing profession since it against the beliefs of the denomination. Many followers of the denomination have died because of medical conditions that could be handled.
The article has made me understand the significant influence that spirituality plays in influencing the nursing professional. Spirituality influences nursing both positively and negatively depending on the belief of the nurses and the patients that seek medical services (Shawn, 2016). The article improved my understanding of nursing such that I now understand why nurses are passionate while taking care of the patients in hospitals. Many spiritual groups that believe in serving the people through nursing have opened many health centers where their nurses take care of the sick people in society. They have been able to offer nursing care to many people who are unable to afford healthcare services because they don't have the resources such as money.
The knowledge from the article guides the practice of nursing since the people in authority can understand why nurses behave the way they do. They can know the vulnerable people in the society; hence they can take appropriate action to ensure they don't suffer for failure to access health care services (Shawn, 2016). Governments have taken action against parents that don't take their sick children to the hospital because of their beliefs. Knowledge from the article guides the practice of nursing to offer their services to the people since it's their spiritual obligation. Knowledge from the article contributes to the understanding of themes in nursing that are related to spirituality such as service to humanity.
Conclusion
In conclusion, spirituality plays a significant role in encouraging people to pursue the nursing profession to offer their services to the needy. Spirituality influences how people view nursing in terms of whether to seek medical attention or not. Spirituality and nursing go hand in hand in ensuring that patients get the best services possible.
