Introduction

Abortion is such a contentious issue that creates a lot of debate between the supporters and pro-life advocates. Although the unborn baby has a right, women should be allowed to perform an abortion because they have the right to decide what happens to their bodies. Besides, the fetus right to life should not involve the right to use another person's body as a support system to preserve its life. Not allowing women to make choices about their bodies is benevolent sexism where women's reproductive health is ignored (Huang et al., 2016).This means that a woman's body should not be viewed as a container to carry the baby, but rather as a human being with rights, feelings, wants and needs. The woman's right to conduct an abortion is protected by the 14th amendment which grants the woman the freedom of personal choice.

Abortion is morally right if the pregnancy is due to rape and if the fetus might cause bodily harm or loss of life to the mother. According to Planned Parenthood (2018), Women who are raped might find it difficult to keep the baby seeing that it is a reminder of the horrible ordeal. This also comes with a lot of psychological trauma, and bringing a baby into such an environment is not the ideal case. The fetus should not be considered as a form of life; it is a potential life form. Until the baby is born it is not a life form. Therefore, any decision relating to it should be left to the mother. Besides, the fetus is incapable of feeling any pain during the abortion and women who are allowed to receive abortions have reduced mental health problems compared to women who are denied the abortion.

Taking care of a baby is very expensive and choosing to abort the baby relieves the mother of the heavy financial implications associated with raising a child. The mother should be given the option of choose whether they want to bring a child who is unplanned for and unwanted into the world. The decision should be left to the mother whether to terminate her pregnancy or keep her baby. It is not a religious decision but rather a reproductive decision that every woman is entitled to make (Barkan, 2014).

Conclusion

Based on the above presented views, I am more convinced that abortion should not be vilified but should be embraced. Being in control of one's body is a basic right and choosing to conduct an abortion should be a right enjoyed by all women.
