The transition from the education system into the job market is often a rigorous process, yet it may define the very path which one's career will take. The standard requirements of job application include a resume, a cover letter, references, and sufficient documentation to support the information given in the resume (Institute for Career Research, 2015). There are, however, a number of factors which one should consider when applying for a job some of which include work environment, leisure-work balance, benefits, possibility for further education, job progression and career growth, among others (Institute for Career Research, 2015). These factors ought to be carefully considered as one seeks a job because they influence the choice of desired workplace and, in extension, the effective methods used in job application.
There are a number of contexts in which the services of a nutritionist are required. A majority of nutritionists are employed in public hospitals, while others are in private practice, private hospitals, education, government, nursing homes, community health centers and industry (Byers, 2014). There are different dynamics that govern operations in each of these work environments. Hence, there are different approaches when applying for employment in each of these environments.
Career Services Advisors (CSAs) are a valuable source of information regarding the current state of job markets and the necessary requirements to achieve a certain goal. Leads found through the support of CSAs would therefore be the best option for a student who has access to such (Institute for Career Research, 2015). The function of CSA s is to help mould the student into the person who best fits in a certain job by advising them on the qualifications which they should have, as well as activities and certifications that would be suited for a person seeking such a position (Byers, 2014). However, in order to make the best out of career advisory services, one should engage CSAs at early stages of life, e.g. upon high school graduation. This enables the CSA to advise on what steps to take in order to grow as envisioned. This approach is more effective than engagement of CSAs in advanced life stages such e.g., when looking for a job.
Current technological levels facilitate online presence and operations. Niche job boards would be a good place in which to carry out a job search. Carrying out a search on a health personnel job board, for instance, may yield numerous results. The main advantage of job boards is that they give the job seeker a variety of available positions from which to choose (Institute for Career Research, 2015). One can, therefore, select a number of jobs for which to apply. Moreover, employers may use job boards to source for qualified employees, in which case they are able to access the applicant's profile.
It is also important for the applicant to build a strong profile on online professional social media such as LinkedIn. LinkedIn is an online social media platform which enables one to network with others who share the same professional interests (Byers, 2014). Many employers also check for LinkedIn profiles of potential employees when they are hiring. It is a simple, straightforward and cost-effective method of marketing one's skills and competencies.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the best job positions are those which have conducive working conditions, proportionate benefits as well as prospects of career advancement. CSAs are effective in shaping ones career path and offer useful insight in the expectations of the job market. Building a professional online presence and brand would also be imperative in the job application process.
