Introduction
Working as a supermarket cashier is never an easy task especially since you get to meet different people with different characters and attitude. At times your day can be spoilt. This can demotivate the worker. I once worked as a supermarket cashier, and many times I got angry and demotivated to work. My motivation and inspiration to perform better at work was the supervisor on many occasions he came and tried to calm down a rude customer, and even buy me lunch for doing my job well. At times he would come and change turns with me when I got so angry at the customers. I never liked this, although I admired the way he handled the customers and I wanted to do better than him. In a few months, I was able to serve customers faster. Another motivation as a cashier was the machines. The computers functioned adequately never had problems and made my work more comfortable, faster and efficient.
A Job I Was Not Motivated To Perform Well
The most frustrating and demotivated job I ever had was working as a hotel waiter. It was my part-time work after school. The manager was ever angry and at times cut our pays because of silly mistakes, often made due to frustration. Pay delay was another factor that made working at the place very difficult. It is awful to have a frustrating experience at work, and at the same time, the payment comes late. The hotel had few tables, slow cooks and at times I would have to get to the kitchen and help out.
Theories for Job Motivation and Satisfaction. Performance of workers is a factor motivation, ability, and work environment. When workers are happy in the workplace, they tend to perform better. When a worker is new to a work place especially if the type of customers can often be frustrating to handle it is very important that the management trains the worker on anger management and how to talk to different customers with less conflict.
To ensure that a worker is more contented with the workplace by creating an all-inclusive environment and try to deliver above and beyond workplace needs and address self-actualization. Self-actualization is becoming all you are capable of becoming. This manifests itself in a person's desire to do better, acquire new skills, take on new challenges and behave in a way that will lead to the attainment of his or her goals as well as the company's goals. A person is more self-actualized when the esteem is high, and a manager or supervisor should constantly be complimenting workers instead of throwing harsh words at them when they do a mistake and give little incentives for good work done.
The working environment should be hygienic and fit for work. This is another motivating factor that is often overlooked. Hygiene factors at the workplace include the company policies, supervisor relationship with other workers, working condition, salary, and salary. For example, imagine working at an office that is too hot, and it is summer, no fans and the place is very stuffy. The management has not provided any drinking water and every time they buy water it becomes too hot to drink, and they have to buy another cold bottle of water. Indeed, workers are miserable in such a working environment, and their output becomes low. An office with good air conditioning, a water dispenser, and the workers are given a bottle of soda during lunchbreaks is more motivating, and the workers will perform better compared to the latter.
Workers are often more motivated in a good working environment. When the management takes care of their worker's needs well and ensures that the workers are more comfortable in their place of work they tend to perform better.
