Introduction
Becoming a psychiatric nurse practitioner has always been my dream since my childhood. Psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) deals with advanced nursing practices providing healthcare services based on scientific, clinical, and theoretical knowledge to handle mental health illness and focus on promoting the state of the patients and prevention of mental diseases. These features of psychiatric mental health practitioners are the ones that motivated me into pursuing this course because I knew that with this knowledge, I would be able to achieve my dreams and make a change in the society. This paper the fore describes my interest in becoming a psychiatric mental health NP following my life experience.
I decided to become a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner when I lost my father to mental health condition and suicide, and I was four-year-old when this happened. He was unable to get access to quality healthcare services. This experience has always been my motivation for helping people and reducing death rates caused by mental health conditions. Since I began to pursue this course, I have developed great passion and interest in it; being with patients with mental health conditions makes an excellent environment for me to practice what I like because of it my destiny.
I have worked with the mental health department as a care aid for the last ten years; this environment much helped in improving my skills and knowledge in PMHNP. In all these years, I have learned a lot concerning my field; being passionate and working hard has helped me overcome some of the challenges associated with is field. I learned that despite the skills and level of education in mental health management, it is essential to be focused and stay positive with patients. I later worked as an LPN, and this was a great move in my life as I was exposed to learning more concepts and skills. In all these work opportunities, I utilized my skills going beyond the role I was given and be able to examine patient's behavior, observed how the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners managed to handle the conditions of the patients. This experience also acted as a motivation, and it helped me to build more interest and skills. Currently, I am working in an inpatient adolescent unit, I have extended to adult and Gero patients, with these experiences I have learned more about patient care practices which I intend to use in throughout my field of interests.
My interest in psychiatric mental health is to help patients overcome mental conditions. According to my plans, I would like to work in a rural area and help to address the issues of mental health. I am diligent, passionate, and focused on helping people with mental health conditions; therefore, despite all the challenges which might come on the way I believe that with skills that I will've acquired at the end of my studies I will be able to achieve the best of my plans. I will use my education to help people in the rural area to realize that there is a possibility it fights and eradicate mental health conditions affecting many people. With my education, passion, hard work, and focus, I will ensure that patients with mental health conditions get access to quality healthcare.
Conclusion
Mental health conditions are one of the big problems facing healthcare, my father's death has much motivated me throughout this course, and I have developed interest and passion for becoming a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. With my experience, skills, and knowledge on mental health, I will ensure that mental health victims in the rural area get access to quality healthcare and address this issue to give them hope and understanding.
