I attended the Mister Africa concert which was held at a small new restaurant in Chicago. The concert began at 8:00 p.m. on the 5th of April, 2019. The setting was quite dark but the stage was well lit. The stage lighting consisted of colored light beams originating from sources located at different points on the stage. The restaurant had the capacity to accommodate up to 30 people but the attendance on that night was approximately 20 people. There were a few empty seats. I managed to secure a seat at the front row of the restaurant which enabled me to have an amazing view of the performances. The entry tickets were free of charge. I will describe my experience at the Mister Africa concert on this report.

An afro-pop music band named Mema performed on that night. The band consisted of four dark-skinned males. Two of the four were vocalists, one was a guitarist and the other, a drummer. There was also a group of dancers that performed along with the music band. The band members were dressed in African outfits and had afro hairstyles. The dancers were also dressed in African outfits but were barefooted. On the stage, the drummer was seated on the right-hand side with the drum set, the guitarist stood on the left and the vocalists stood in the middle during their entire performance.

The audience mainly consisted of youngsters with a few elderly people. Even though the band performed with a lot of vigor, the audience seemed very professional. From the beginning to the end of the concert, the only response the audience gave was total silence. I did not see anyone singing along with the band or cheering during the performance. The attendees just enjoyed the performance while on their seats with a number of the recording on their smartphones and iPads. Movement during the performance was minimal which enabled the audience to focus on the band.

The band performed a total of five songs and the concert lasted for about 45 minutes. They performed afro-pop music. The band began their performance with a song they named Swazuri. The synergy between the sound from the drums and the guitar along with the sound from the vocalists was spectacular. Each song they performed was from a different genre of African popular music. I had never experienced that before. Every other song after that was breathtaking. The dancers displayed dance styles I had never seen before and which really caught the attention of the audience. This could be proved by the minimized movements in the audience.

I loved quite a number of things about the concert. First, I loved how the band could switch from performing one genre of African popular music to another. The performers were very talented and had a lot of passion for what they did. Second, I loved the stage lighting set up which I believe was as perfect as it could be. I really appreciate the fact that the concert began at the set time without any delays. Third, the seats were comfortable and arranged near the stage which was commendable. Fourth, I loved that the dancers were full of energy during the performance which was exceptional. Fifth, I just loved the overall set up of the restaurant which made me feel at home.

There was just a couple of things I didn't like about the concert. One was the response of the audience. For me, I love concerts where the audience sings along and cheers during the performance. A second was that the restaurant staff did not serve any drinks. I would have preferred that drinks are served during the performance. Even if only water was served, it would have made the audience feel better. A third was that the concert lasted for a very short time. I would have preferred that the concert lasted for at least an hour and a half as opposed to the 45 minutes that it lasted. Overall, the concert was a great experience. I look forward to attending such concerts in the future.
