Communication is critical when it comes to maintaining a proper relationship whether formal or informal. From the reading of non-verbal communication, it is evident that individuals communicate loudest in their non-verbal communication which includes gestures, facial expressions, posture, tone and eye contact. As people interact, they give and receive signals through body language and movement; in some instances, people may react in a certain way through their body language, but communicate differently verbally. Through this, the recipient receives mixed signals because they are torn between believing the verbal or the non-verbal message.
The codes are categorized according to their functions and origins to give a specific meaning. Some of the symbols such as emblems are however used to substitute words for instance when one is beckoning using the first finger communicating that the other individual should come closer. Also, there are others that can be used together while communicating for instance use of regulators and the non-word sounds. The study also profoundly shows that individuals also communicate a lot in their silence to show that they do not have a response or probably they did not comprehend the message.
From the study, it is evident that non-verbal communication improves communication and interpersonal relationships. The codes relay a specific message that the individual communicated wanted to relay initially. The cues supplement each other with the verbal interactions because they also help in repeating the spoken message. However, I have also learned that the codes can contradict with the message that an individual wanted to convey or even put more emphasis. Therefore, the non-verbal cues are more important in defining one's personality; for instance by judging their facial expressions by how they express their emotions. However, the real person's behavior is determined by judging their behavior by how they do heir things or react towards a particular situation on a daily basis.
Non-verbal communication is nevertheless vague and prone to misjudgment. Besides, using the symbols is incomplete without the use of verbal communication as it cannot be effective. Once the recipient fails to understand the message using the symbols, they are likely to give wrong feedback. For instance, when two individuals from different cultures come together and communicate through the non-verbal cues, they are likely to have a misunderstanding because the codes could be having a different meaning. Comparing both verbal and non-verbal communication, oral communication is used on its own in different instances while non-verbal communication cannot be used in a telephone conversation and many more instances. Finally, nonverbal communication has a vast possibility of distortion of the message because of wrong interpretation and thus encouraging ineffective communication.
Conclusion
Recently, with the development of social media sites, it has become easy for individuals to communicate both verbally and non-verbally even at a distance through their mobile forms. There are images regarded as emojis which are images that they tend to express their feelings at that particular moment. Because non-verbal communication is a process that rapidly flows back and forth, it is evident that when communicating through mobile phones or electronic mails, it becomes difficult to connect while communicating. One would conclude that it is essential to send the appropriate non-verbal cues because the emotions that are brought out have a significant impact on the listener. The non-verbal codes are dependent on the technology of which their instruments are entirely incomprehensible.
