Owning a restaurant has both the advantages and disadvantages. Being the owner of a restaurant can be work which is grueling and taking of financial risks at times. Despite having various disadvantages owning a restaurant, the positives of opening a restaurant tend to outweigh the negatives. The advantages of owning a restaurant include the owner of the restaurant is in a position of incorporating their theme and style; it helps in bringing something new to the community such as paying taxes.
The positive of being the owner of a small business such as a restaurant is that the owner can incorporate their theme and style in the business. The first thing that an owner of the restaurant should decide how it should look is the menu. The menu is considered to be an internal sales and marketing tool that is important while operating a restaurant. The owner decides how the menu will be printed and designed in a manner that will be appealing to the customers since once it is placed on the customer's table or hand, it not only determines what the customer will order but as well as how much they will be willing to spend in the restaurant. Small business ownership is important since it helps the owner to act independently. The owner has the freedom of controlling their destiny and what they want. The owner of a small business is directly involved in the operation of the business from the concept to design and finally to the creation without others opinion.
Opening a restaurant helps in bringing something new to the community. A new restaurant tends to bring out a unique charm and character in the community. Small business owners act as an integral part of the community in which they work and live, and therefore they are usually conscious regarding the impact of their decisions on their neighbors. The small business owners tend to involve themselves in social responsibility activities in the society where they have set the business, and hence this brings something new in the community such as the development of social amenities ("10 Ways Small Businesses Benefit the Local Community"). According to Murray, the opening up of a restaurant helps in paying of state taxes since in business it is not all about income taxes. The owner of the restaurant is required to pay different types of taxes just like people who are in other general businesses. The owner of a small business pays the tax through the tax returns of their income.
The negatives of opening a restaurant are that it is required to adhere to the set state health and safety rules. A bad reputation greatly affects the financial position of the restaurant and its revenue. Food inspectors usually visit the restaurant several times to ensure that it is operating in a way that the health conditions of the consumers is not being affected or to verifying various consumer complains. A restaurant has a high possibility of getting a bad reputation if the food and drinks that are offered to the customers affects their health due to lack of proper hygiene and sanitation for example through food poisoning. The reputation of the restaurant is also affected negatively if the staff working in the restaurant are not qualified and lack professionalism. Lack of professionalism results in the quality of services being offered to be of low quality. Lack of consistency in the management of the restaurant as well as what is offered in the restaurant results in the restaurant having a bad reputation. Lack of consistency is caused by lack of having a clear message regarding the marketing strategy as well as the quality of food that the restaurant offers.
The reputation of a restaurant is very important, and therefore the management or the owner of the restaurant should be concerned when the restaurant's reputation is considered as being negative. Despite the restaurant having a bad reputation, there are several ways through which the owner can rectify the situation and counter the bad reputation. One of the ways of dealing with the flaws is by reaching out to the customers one by one or through the various social media channels and apologizing and request them to give their opinions on what they want you as the owner of the business to do to prove to them that your business values them. Before posting on the different social media sites, the owner of the restaurant should ensure that they plan the response properly to ensure that it is not misleading. The other way is ensuring that the cause of the trouble that is damaging the reputation of the restaurant is fixed. This can be done through retraining the staff working in the restaurant to ensure that they provide quality services to the customers and in turn, this will help attract the customers to the restaurant. The owner of the restaurant should change the recipe or remove a recipe that a customer complains about and replace it with a better option (How to Fix Bad Restaurant Reviews").Conclusion
In conclusion opening of a restaurant has both the positive and negative sides. The opening of a restaurant helps the owner to be able to pay state taxes as well as act independent while deciding how the business will be operated. The reputation of a restaurant can be ruined easily if the staff are not well trained and qualified and also if hygiene is not well maintained.
