Introduction

In many cases, whenever the term scientists are used, what flash the minds of many people are professors in long white lab coats, glasses, gloves, and chemicals. However, this is just a stereotype of who a scientist is or should be. For one to be classified as a scientist, there are a couple of factors, qualifications, and roles played by the same. By definition, a scientist is one who gathers information systematically and uses the same to analyze a hypothesis, gradually gaining knowledge and sharing the same for the benefit of humanity.

A scientist can further be defined by there area of specialization and how they are relevant to society. For instance, based on how a scientist conducts their research, one can be either a statistician (where the use of statistics is involved) or a data scientist (were they primary on collection and analysis of data). Secondly, a scientist can also be classified according to the topic of interest and what they are seeking to expound further on. A scientist interested in chemicals is called a chemist, whereas one involved in the study of the earth is a geologist. Finally, a scientist can be classified in terms of application. A scientist whose research affects the food industry is a food scientist whereas one who specializes in computers is a computer scientist. This paper will expound on the UCSF COVID-19 citizen science initiative.

The project is aimed to help curb the novel coronavirus that has been affecting humanity since late 2019. With the number of new infections and deaths rising by the day, people are becoming more cautious and fearful of the virus. The project is of interest to me because it sheds more light on the virus and allows more people to understand the disease at a deeper level. With the number of rumors and propaganda increasing by the day, it is only safe that people receive the right information concerning the same. The project seeks to train scientists who will, in turn, educate others concerning the disease and minimize the rumors circulating concerning the same.

The Student Learning Aspects for human biology that is covered by this project is to understand the pathophysiology of the novel coronavirus. By understanding how the disease manifests in the social circulatory system, citizens are prompted to take better care not to contract the same. Similarly, the transmission routes and methods will be well elaborated in the project, and this will play a significant part in reducing new cases.

Some of the expected results of this project is a better understanding of the novel coronavirus. The project will also expound on how to reduce the spread of the same best. Some people are still in denial that the virus is real, and as a result, they do not observe the preventive measures that are outlined by the W.H.O. However, when they learn and understand the true nature of the disease, they are likely to improve their behavior and work on minimizing the spread. Were I to be given a chance to participate in this project, I would be on the frontline of teaching my fellow peers and neighbors on the novel coronavirus. I would correct and clear any myth that they have about the disease and make it known to them the facts and statistics affiliated with the disease. Besides, I am sufficiently aware that my peers in a similar situation as mine would also get involved in this.

Through the utilization of the social networking tools, I would spread the information precisely and consequently ensure that I get other individuals on-board. Through this project, my colleagues and I will alleviate our civic indulgence through understanding the prevailing circumstances and therefore make the lives of fellow humans better. Lastly, it is significant to demarcate that my notion regarding scientists was altered as I looked into these citizen science projects. Specifically, I learned that a scientist happens to be a very noble individual in society, and it does not take much for one to be termed as a scientist.
