According to Kate Norquay in what I learned from 4 years of working at MacDonald's, it is unjustifiable to judge people concerning the organization they work for. There are many reasons surrounding people`s choice for different careers. Most of the individuals` personality is un-relatable to the organization they work for, and it is common for people to come up with unjustified conclusions on the same. There is no logic in thinking that one is better than others working in labor-intensive jobs since this is not necessarily the case.
A person working in a fast food joint such as MacDonald`s is in no way inferior to someone employed in another corporate entity. This is just a misconception that people have. Every profession is valuable since there is a reason why various individuals fit in particular circumstances. The popular notion that working in a fast food job is not a real job is a stereotype mostly brought up by close friends, family, and even relatives. For example, the formerly mentioned individuals may keep asking the concerned party when they are going to get a real job. This shows that they have no regard for the occupation. What they ought to understand is that the level of satisfaction offered to the customers is what matters entirely. There are many situations where one can work in a glorified profession and yet end up being miserable since there is no fulfillment in what they are doing.
People tend to conform to self-perceived notions existent within the society regarding certain professions. At MacDonald`s for instance, if a white person is seen working as an attendee, it appears as if they are in the wrong job. For this reason, people continuously keep on asking them when they will get a real career. Conversely, immigrants and colored individuals working in such capacities are never taunted by their colleagues and family, seemingly because this happens to be the kind of work that everyone expects them to be doing. What people do not understand is that they can work in other professions and still not feel fulfilled. It is illogical to think that those working at a food joint are lazy and that it is an act of slavery. Most office jobs tend to be worse than this yet people keep venerating such professions owing to their high pay.
Norquay realized sooner than later that working at MacDonald`s was not that bad after all. She can efficiently indicate why this is the case by citing various examples in the course of her analysis. Initially, indolence and arrogance were what essentially characterized her routine. This was because she believed that she was better suited for another profession, and also that it would be unworthy for her to toil for something that she had little regard for. Further still, her evaluation of various occupations based on the information she had, made her realize that there was no much difference after all. For instance, working for MacDonald`s is not that different from working at Chipotle. Even the common perception that MacDonald uses slavery does not require distant companies such as H&M whereby the same is believed to be universal. It is, nevertheless, apparent that every profession has its category of individuals, and the only significant deterrent is what various companies are looking for in their prospective candidates. Just because MacDonald`s accommodates individuals from all sectors including those who are disabled and obese does not necessarily make it inferior to other corporations.
To further belabor on the above premise, it is clear as illustrated in examples offered in the context of the analysis that bias has no place in the society. People tend to be overly selective when seeking employment opportunities since they have already tricked their mind into believing that some of the jobs are too inferior to them. They can, however, work in such capacities and end up being better people than they would have having joined prestigious corporations. Besides, brilliant individuals working at belittled companies end up becoming easily noticed compared to those who seek employment in corporations professed to be greater. One has to concur with the argument brought about by the author to comprehend that they do not deserve a good job. Instead, what they need is to be good at whatever they do. Work being done by lesser people in society is not worthless like many people tend to believe. It is the high time that people realize that superiority does not come with working in what the society thinks to be the best professions in the industry.Conclusion
To sum it all up, people have to come to terms with the reality that every job is essential, regardless of its status within the society. It has for long been assumed that those working in fast food joints such as MacDonald`s tend to be inferior to other workers in the industry, whereas this is not true. People tend to think that such jobs are a preserve for the subordinate groups of individuals in the society. The misery associated with such work is in no way different to that being experienced by others working in idolized positions. People have to realize that the effort and dedication they put towards their work will, in the end, determine whether their chosen profession will add any value to their lives or not. The earlier that one learns what best suits them, the better.
