Introduction
While selecting a career path, it is vital to properly consider all the aspects of what the career can offer in the course of one's lifetime. These considerations are given aforethought since what may appeal to you now may not be appealing as much several years from now. However, in recent times, many youths have been pursuing careers in business. These careers range from accounting, to finance, marketing, business leadership, and entrepreneurship. Courses involved include accounting, business administration, sales and marketing, business management, international business, business communications, and human resource management among others. Therefore, what might be some of the reasons why most of the youths are attracted to pursuing careers in business?
They provide practical choices for the application
Business careers have more job opportunities than and security than any other career opportunity because the skills obtained from them are required virtually in all the existing industries (Steele, 2017). It does not matter whether it is a fun company such as Disney, a technological company such as Microsoft, a manufacturing company such as McDonald's, service companies such as FedEx or health companies such as McKesson Corporation. All these companies require personnel with business acumen to function efficiently and develop in their industries. This ensures the demand for people with a business career relatively high irrespective of the economic times. Young people with, therefore, get attracted to such careers because of their versatility and a wide range of applications. They are always assured of getting a job without any restriction to a particular industry.
There is a large opportunity for specialization
Joining the business career involves entry into the business studies program which provides a myriad of opportunities for specialization, i.e., one may choose to specialize in human resource, marketing, accounting or business finance or venture into a specific industry such as the fashion industry or the humanitarian sector of non-profit organizations ("Asian Correspondent," 2017). These specializations, also known as emphasis include, accounting emphasis which involves keeping track of all the financial activities within the business including the general ledgers, balance sheets and budgets; finance emphasis which involves providing advisory roles in business and knowledge on how to raise funds through proper investments; marketing emphasis which aims at promoting to increase the sales of its products or services, market research and advertising and entrepreneurship emphasis which involves establishing a new business through innovation and inventive business methods.
There is a myriad of opportunities for advancement in business careers
Business careers provide more opportunities for advancement in careers as opposed to the other professions, i.e., it involves entry as a mere employee to promotion to managerial positions and later to executive positions, which may not be the case for technical careers (Steele, 2017). Moreover, with advancement comes increment in salaries and opportunities to challenge yourself as well as more growth opportunities.
Careers in business allow for flexibility
To make life more interesting, many people at some point in their career desire for a change. This character is more common among the millennials and the young generations who always want to try something new and see what life has to offer (Hamel, 2019). In such a case, it would be easier for one to engage in other businesses or projects that would be of interest while in the business career as opposed to other professions such as engineering, nursing or radiology among others, i.e., a human resource manager can easily shift from a manufacturing company to a service, technology or health company of interest while it would be cumbersome for an engineer to shift from a manufacturing to a service industry or a doctor to shift from a health sector to a manufacturing sector. This is because the skills learned in business can easily be transferred between companies operating in different industries as opposed to technical skills.
They provide opportunities to retire at a relatively young age
In addition to getting a job, many young people currently focus on the retirement age and packages involved among other factors while selecting a career path. In this case, they settle for business careers because they have observed several businesspersons retire in their later forties and early fifties. Such scenarios arise since people in business careers tend to be paid excellent salaries and benefit packages that enable them to save money and retire faster especially those in managerial positions (Overaker, 2018). The business knowledge and experience earned also enable them to start their own businesses and increase their income stream.
Conclusion
To conclude, many young people prefer careers in business because they come with more advantages compared to other professions. These advantages, as discussed above include the practical application of the business knowledge, the various opportunities for specialization and advancement in their careers, career flexibility, opportunity to retire at a relatively younger age and a higher propensity of starting and managing their own businesses. All these are vital factors that most of the young people look into which guide their decisions towards selecting a suitable career path.
