Introduction
The two-stories orchestrates a similar theme with different tones, "Hills like White Elephants," and "Story." The two couples had many issues when it came to having their relationship situated. The couples in, "Story" didn't get along while the couple in, "Hills Like White Elephants" got along maturely. Between the two stories the reason why, "Hill like White Elephant" shows effective signs of communication is, because the two couples show signs of love, while in, "Story" the couple show signs of mistrust. Even though the two stories display two different manifestations of communication between the couple, both couples come up with an agreement.
Weak Communication and Mistrust in "Story"
First, the couple in, "Story" has weak communication due to signs of mistrust. When mistrust comes into a relationship, it is challenging to restore what we feel for the other person again. This suspicion leaves an obsession with the girl in the story. For instance, even though the guy talks to the girl one on one that he is not coming home, the girl ceases to believe that. She does not find him because he doesn't want to go back. The guy becomes distrusted for not being able to communicate with her effectively. When the guy does not effectively communicate with the girl, she starts to over think. For example, the girl begins to believe over and makes it hard to control the anxiety that she has for the guy.
Mistrust allows the girl to be unsatisfied with the guy's behavior. The guy does not communicate with the girl because the guy doesn't trust the girl while the girl doesn't believe the guy. The reason the guy doesn't follow up with the girl is that she will want to stalk him. The guy also plays hard to get for the girl and makes it hard for the girl because the girl wants the guy for herself. I remember a time when I didn't give any sign of communication to my girlfriend because she wanted to know where I was. She never believed me and would come looking for me. Their communication decreases, because of the same reason. The girl stalks him while the guy doesn't get back to her about his site. When the girl went to the guy's house, the guy didn't leave any sign of communication that he was home for the girl, and the girl didn't leave any signs that he was coming to see the guy. She did not believe if he was telling the truth. Since she could not find out the fact it was tough for her to understand, her feelings made her defense against the guy. The girl became even more distrusted when he saw that the guy's living room had changed the girl saw women's clothes in the guy's living room. Mistrust is terrible for the two couples because of the inconsistency of communication, lack of trust, and negativity. Consequences occurred when the couple's conversation with the girl was lacking this made it hard for what the couple was saying.
Effective Communication and Love in "Hills Like White Elephants"
Secondly, the couple in, "Hills Like White Elephants" displays better communication simply because they are in love. Since the couple is in love, it helped them to have a happier relationship with one another. Their love is tighter because the couple has been loving each other for a very long time. The American talks about how each other's past use to be before they had a baby and wished he had the same past, the American had before something new started to come into their lives. The American shows love they had for each other.
The love, the couple had made their feeling more attached towards one another. Being in love floods our brains with chemicals, making each other more attached by each other's desires. Even though their love is strong, they don't allow the smallest things get to them. The two couples had trouble debating on whether they want to keep the baby the two are more negotiable about what they want to do. The girl doesn't need to hide or lie to the guy that Jig has a baby instead she is very comfortable with what she wants to tell the guy. For example, she talks about the beads and the white elephants as a symbol of their son in The American. The American was very supportive of the situation and patiently waits to see what the girl wanted to say. They use the love they have for each other to improve for a tighter situation they like and don't like. The girl does not like that the American does not agree with her and The American doesn't like that Jig doesn't listen to The American when specific situations occur.
Better communication is developed when they both don't know what they want from each other. For example, the couple had a tough time deciding whether or not they want to continue having the baby. The American display love for Jig when he describes the time they use to have without having to decide on having a baby.
Agreement and Resolution in Both Stories
Thirdly although the two stories display two different signs of communication the couples eventually agree on their matters. The couple, both make a deal in Hills like white elephants, and story when the couple finally made up a decision. The couple in Hills like white elephants decided not to keep the baby. Even though it took a while for the couple to make a final decision, it helped them to grow past what was bothering the couple. In comparing Story shows how the couple agrees. The couple came back together, even though communication was lost between the both of the couples. The two-character apologize for their actions. In the story, the guy says, "That everything that went wrong tonight was his fault, and he's sorry." Even though the girl mistrusts the guy he apologizes for his action with the girl.
Conclusion
Overall, "Story" does not show good communication because the character has trouble engaging with each other due to mistrust. Even though the guy tells the girl something, she still has doubts. This doesn't show the bond they have with each other. As in, "Hills Like White Elephants" they sort things out by talking to each other drinking with each other when they both don't like something but want to find a final solution. In the "Story," they both don't have that much communication when it comes to seeing each other. The couple doesn't have that effective communication because the guy doesn't love her as The American, and Jig has for each other. As of, "Hill like White Elephants" and, "Story" the two couples show a better bond together when communication is being reasonably agreeable to each other.
