Introduction
The media industry is rich in career opportunities courtesy of the myriad activities associated with it (Careers in the Media, 2019). These opportunities arise from the preparation of media content, development as well as marketing. Below is a countdown of the opportunities it presents.
Video Production and Promotion
While production revolves around the creation of media content, media promotion is all about marketing produced content. Media production activities include script writing, assembly of the props used in the production process, video coverage, editing, and promotion include advertisements (Gross, Foust and Burrows 2017, p. 59). For instance, Stephen Reynolds makes his video production debut by successfully delivering the Vendetta. In conclusion, video shooting and promotion preoccupies individuals who make a living out of shooting videos, and this justifies it as a career opportunity.
Camera Recording and Editing
Camera recording is capturing live audio meant for future play or reference. Stephen Reynolds is a typical example of individuals who have earned a living out of shooting videos (Careers in the Media, 2019). Video shooting also entails a variety of activities that yield various careers like video analysis. Typically, the latter ensures that whatever content is capture makes sense and is pertinent to the primary goal (O'Neill 2012, p. 98). Video editing dwells on the rearrangement of video clips yield pleasant videos (Dancyger 2014, p. 361). This is because video recording is normally random, and thus harbors errors. Therefore, it becomes conclusive that camera recording and editing are acknowledged as career opportunities.
Directing
Directing media activities is a managerial practice that streamlines media services. As such, media directors instruct the technical teams tasked with the creation of media content as well as other characters involved (Birmingham Updates, 2019). Technically, they facilitate the preparation of the film production processes through selection of costumes worn by characters, the technology used in the whole film production process, and issuing special instruction facilitating successful film production. In conclusion, directing media activities is a process of managing the creation and delivery of media content.
Script Writing
Script writing is the art of writing plays, used in video production, in the form of texts. Scripts outline the plot, dialogue, audio alongside visual and audio components of media content. Stephen Reynolds, for instance, spent much time writing many scripts, an activity he began at ten years old. This would pay off upon releasing the Vendetta (Careers in the Media, 2019). Therefore, script writing defines the structure of the media content, and this is typically the content produced.
In conclusion, the media industry offers career opportunities like video production and promotion, editing, playwriting, directing, editing, and lastly content recording. Stephen Reynolds is a beneficiary of these opportunities by becoming a known video producer. Thus, there are careers from which an individual can comfortably choose.
Portfolio Artefacts
Artifacts are evidence of career experience. In media arts, they showcase the various works by media professionals (Careers in the Media, 2019). Below are some the artifacts I will include in my portfolio
Written Film Reviews
A written film review is a well-balanced synthesis, both thematic and technical analysis of a film. Much of such reviews are personal opinions about the films; I maintained default anatomy in the analysis. In most cases, the reviews would begin with an introduction that incorporates contextual information as well as its background. This is then followed by a thesis statement, and the film's plot summary (Blaus and Baruk 2010, p. 432). The critical analysis comes next, and this presents an in-depth discussion of the film's themes, the plot as well as characters is the focal point while citing various evidence. Also, file reviews break down films, and hence, hassle-free comprehension.
Script for an Advert
Scripts written for advertisements are short pieces of information on particular products and services. Application of professionalism, when developing advert scripts, helps in evading plagiarism. I achieve this through the use of special effects, unique musical introductions as well as local taglines that are specific to the item being advertised (O'guinn, Allen and Semenik 2011, p. 395). Much caution is necessary, and this is to ensure that the number of words written for the advert matches the time allocated for it. For instance, it is not prudent to write a long script that supersedes the amount of time the advert should last, and the reverse is true. Also, the script should be written by the description of the product. This is significant because delivering accurate information is key, especially in advertisements. Delivering wrong or false information through adverts will naturally drive away customers. Therefore, advert scripts are the basis of product promotions, and this is because they bear descriptive information.
Audio Project
Audio projects are non-visual media items exploiting sound as the medium of communication. The media industry exploits various audio parameters to pursue the attention of the audience. Thus, much of the attention is given to works through which many individuals can listen to and hear. A typical example of this is a discussion. In most cases, discussions are based on trending topics as well as factors affecting the lives of the audience (Duggan 2008, p. 150). Thus, to draw much attention from a large audience, basing the discussions in matters that severely affect their lives is crucial. For instance, matters relating to politics and leadership is a fundamental subject, and this is because every individual has an interest. The same case applies to the development of podcasts and audio monologues. The two will engage the audience in a listening process as they strive to get the information being delivered. Even so, I would participate in a live audio project in which I would read a script on a live radio session. Thus, an audio project is a sound-based media content used in communication.
Video Project
Video projects are moving the pictorial representation of items. They are obtained by capturing motile pictures of subjects. An excellent example of a video project is a short documentary that can med made out of an interview (Ritchie 2013, p. 148). Normally, documentaries are non-fictional motion pictures documenting, or rather, recording various aspects of reality, and are majorly intended for instructional or educational purposes.
In conclusion, I would aim at obtaining accurate information, especially through interrogating credible sources such as individuals. I would record the interviews and later broadcast them for the public. Therefore, video projects are moving the picture of objects, and these stunning images are widely used in the media industry for various purposes.
Personal Development Planning (PDP)
This is a process of developing action-oriented plans based on values, awareness, reflection, self-empowerment alongside career development. For instance, drawing a market entry plan, as a media personality, is a PDP (Careers in the Media, 2019). Below is a countdown of my PDP.
Exceptional and Quality Media Content Development
This is an extraordinary way of producing substantial media content that supported consumer expectation as well as outdoing rivals. It ears credit, reputation, and referrals, and this will enhance the development of my career. I will achieve this by actively taking part in the development of media items, through discipline and professionalism, such as audio and visual contents in which live participation is key (Duggan 2008, p. 150). Therefore, active participation in media content is a typical PDP, and this is because it enhances quality services.
Confidence and Self-esteem
Confidence and self-esteem is an aspect of self-appreciation and self-belief. They are motivational factors that drive individuals to achieve more in their endeavors. The development of self-esteem and confidence has to be well-thought-out, and this is because of the stiff competition that will also arise from media personalities (Guindon 2009, p. 19). One of the most significant ways through which I would build the confidence, in myself as well as the market is through developing free samples of excellently written film reviews. Through concise and accurate film reviews, I will attract the attention of media fans as well as investors who would partner with me as I pursue excellence in my career (Blaus and Baruk 2010, p. 432). The essence of this is because a large pool of fans, as well as supporting investors are also a source of motivation and this, amounts to developed self-esteem and confidence. In conclusion, having high levels of self-esteem and confidence is a precursor to success, and the reverse is true.
Proactivity
Proactivity is the quality of self-motivation, anticipation as well as orientation towards change. For instance, change orientation facilitates the development of contemporary adverts that outdo the traditional presentations (O'guinn, Allen and Semenik 2011, p. 395). This is what I will exploit because its net effect is competitiveness. This will drive clients down my sales' funnel. Again, proactivity will trigger the self-initiated discipline, and this will enable me to handle my clients with sheer professionalism. In conclusion, this is a fundamental personal strategy fueling success by self-drive and motivation.
Identification of Weaknesses and Strengths
Strengths and weaknesses are personal characters that indicate individuals' capacities as well as disabilities to perform particular tasks. Identification weaknesses and strengths establish qualities to take advantage of as well as those that require improvement. This is a strategic move because coming to terms with my strengths will put me on a path in which I would maximize my strengths and abilities to excel in the media industry. For instance, if I am leading the market in the development of high-quality content, I would take advantage of that by setting the bar higher than my rivals (Duggan 2008, p. 150). Conversely, having learned my weaknesses, I would work on them to enhance the game. Through this, I will be leaving no room to be outdone by any competitor. Therefore, identification of weaknesses and strengths is a lethal tool for succeeding as well as edging out competitors.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the PDP is a model through which individuals structure their operations and activities towards success. It outlines the necessary qualities needed for success in a particular career. For instance, the PDP suggests that developing high self-esteem, confidence, proactivity, identification of strengths and weaknesses as well as exceptional production of media content is a recipe for success in the industry.
