Introduction

Self-help groups such as Narcotic Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous, the characters Tim and Courtney, respectively, are seen sharing their stories to the social workers seeking guidance and counseling on their drug abuse behavior. The support member displays skills of encouragement, personal warmth, and empathy (Keum et al. 2018). The group dynamics are used as a means for solving problems, innovative and productive means for the achievement of the goals of the groups, and as a means of enhancing teamwork. The dynamics observed in the movies of Tim and Courtney includes the intergroup relation dynamics where Tim and Courtney develop a strong relationship with the coworkers before sharing their stories.

Narcotic Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous self-help groups are of benefit to persons suffering from anger and addiction in such a way that: the person's self-efficacy is improved; that is; the person gets to understand the effects of violence and addiction. Secondly, the social contact of the person is maintained. Persons in anger and addiction tend to isolate themselves from others; isolation leads to negative thinking's, such as suicidal cases. The self-help groups create meanings to the victims that many people are undergoing through what they are facing, and isolation isn't the solution (Kelly et al. 2019).

According to (Yeoh et al. 2018), the social worker of the self-help groups intervenes and creates more significant benefits for the group members in the local environment opportunities through commitment and advocating of those persons who feel isolated in the community in bettering their lives and having their voices heard.

A facilitator of the self-help groups can have the predisposition to suppress the group and therefore leading to its weakening and failure in achieving the intended purpose. Implementation of the self-help groups is of great benefit in a community, as it helps in dealing with emerging cases of drug abuse, depression, and other situations that may threaten the victim's life. This promotes the growth of the community as a sense of living is created in every member's mind (Singh, 2019).
