Introduction
The world currently is facing lots of issues some of which are not really what the societies in the world want. Personally, the recent immigration policies that were put in place with the trump administration are just not working for me. The administration recently passed a strategy of building a wall on the Mexican border to curb the illegal immigration of Mexicans in to the US. Mexico is located on the southern part of the US, and thus the border between Mexico and the US in the south is what is known as the southern border. Immigration on its own is essential in any country and therefore, building the wall according to me is a clear sign of bad leadership. Supposing I had the power to change this, here is what I would do.
According to the Trump administration, Mexico was to cater for the funding of building the wall which according to me does not seem fair. It is unrealistic because this was not a decision that was from the Mexican government and it does not have to pay for this cost because the Mexican immigrants do not entirely create the border problems. President Donald Trump by closing the southern border was more than willing to cancel the overall relationship between Mexico and the US. He planned to do this by cancelling a planned meeting that the Mexican president had himself scheduled. Supposing I had the powers to change this situation, together with the help of the Congress, I would ensure that the policy that was passed in the 90s is followed to the latter. The policy indicated that it was illegal for any individual to be denied entrance into America basing on the religion or ideologies. What the trump administration is trying to do is going against this policy and putting up his policy which only tends to satisfy his self-interests. I would ensure that the Mexican immigrants are treated with respect and are not denied entrance into the US because not all of them are in the US illegally. In the beginning, the Congress had a concern when it came to illegal immigration from Mexico. Because of this issue, there was a doubled increase of control agencies at the border as well as an expansion offence in areas with high traffic. This was in addition to the increased penalties for individuals aiding illegal immigrants to gain access into America.
The building of the wall on the Mexican American border according to me is a bad idea. This is because the assumptions that the trump administration made about illegal immigration are utterly false and invalid. Even though he believes that he is doing this for good for the right course, his actions are entirely based on assumptions other than solid facts. He thinks that the Mexican immigrants are poor and unable to cope with the situations in their country and therefore get into the US to exploit the resources provided by the government and engage in criminal activities. He further adds that these Mexican immigrants get to the US and steal some of the high paying jobs meant for the American citizens and that closing the border would mean an increased job acquisition among the American citizen resulting from reduced illegal immigration. If I had the power and ability, I would advise the trump administration to stop focusing only on Mexican illegal immigrants and look at illegal immigrants entering the US from countries like Central America. Instead of closing the border, the trump administration should instead increase employment opportunities enough for the citizens instead of blaming illegal immigrants of stealing their jobs. The Mexican immigrants do not necessarily have to come in as poor or as criminals; they can as well come as investors and stakeholders responsible for the creation of essential firms in the country. Closing the border may as well mean closing essential opportunities.
Not every person who can speak Spanish is from Mexico. Many of the people who pass through the Mexican border are mostly from Central America. They have a record of running away from the harsh conditions experienced in their countries like in the case of Guatemala, El Salvador, and other politically unstable countries. These people pass through the Mexican land with most of them being minors seeking a safe place of refuge. Looking deeper at this issue, the cases of illegal immigration is not entirely a problem arising from Mexico but other Central American countries. I would advise the Trump administration to shift his focus on Mexico and solidly focus on Central America.
According to me, the plan is unrealistic because most of the analysts believe that many of the American immigrants come in to the US by air. President Trump is focusing on the issue of entry without inspection, but he ignores the fact that visas are granted to many of the immigrants and do not leave once they enter. The case of overstaying does not come from Mexico alone but from all around the world. The plan for closing the wall does not address the issue since this act of immigrants being able to get visas is the primary cause of immigration. If I had the powers, I would advise the trump administration to start by identifying immigrants who have overstayed and ensure that they return to their countries instead of closing the border.
