Introduction
Theatre has a significant influence on society. Theatre is an excellent platform for different people with different talents to showcase their talent. Plays can also be a source of entertainment and income. As much as theatre helps positively, some people think that it has a negative influence on society. In the present day, where the money is highly valued that other more important things, most people venture into theatre in search of money. The main reason most people invest in their talents is money, and they would do anything to achieve this. Due to this kind of mindset, actors and producers do not pay much attention to the morals of society. Most theatre producers would focus more on what will bring in more money than what will impact people's lives positively.
For this reason, religion seeing theater as a threat to the spiritual life of humankind. Different people, mostly philosophers, have come up with various explanations showing that theater activities are a danger to human spirituality and morals. In the document (The Christian and the Theater ) published by the American Tract Society has its take on the effect of theatre to the church and the society.
We all reason and pursue things differently in life. A lot of things determine how we seek things in life. Some of the things that influence our thinking are the way we have been brought up and the environment we were in as we grow, our experiences, and the people and things we interact with. Theatre being part of the things that we come across as we grow up, influences out mentality, which in return affects the way we perceive morality.
Theatre is giving us a certain kind of comfort in whichever route someone chooses to follow. There is that freedom of being whichever kind of a person in the society and theatre encourages that. With theatre, it doesn't matter if you choose a morally upright lifestyle or you go against it. The religion insists that every individual life an ethically honest way, and that is the only way that is acceptable in the eyes of God. Having to live your life your way without any rules goes against the morals of Christianity.
Theatre encourages immoral behaviors that are very sinful in the Christian community. The actors show their nudity in the plays, there are acts of violence, and it is being celebrated and other kinds of evil deeds too. The actors sin while the ones that are watching are encouraged to sin also. If an individual keeps watching articles that support evils behaviors, he might, at some point in life, justify his actions once he sins.
The document gives the impression that theatre wastes time and attention. Since theatre does not impact our lives positively in the Christian way, watching it would be a waste on time. People focus all of their attention on something that will only lead them to the wrong side of the Christian doctrines. The people would instead use that energy on something productive that will help change the world into a better place.
However bad plays and acts are, they can be of a good impact to our lives too. Acting can help Christians understand some of the bible teachings better. Some people understand things better when they can relate to it, and acting is one of the methods that can help one connect. Few rules can be put across that will prevent acting that is against Christian morals.
