The cinematographer for the movie is Mihai Malaimare Jr. Mihai is Romanian cinematography, and his work is exceptional in "The Hate U Give" movie just like in his other works (Tillman Jr.). Cinematography plays a very critical role in appealing to the emotions of the audience. The director of cinematography in the movie has made use of format, visual differentiation and colours to distinguish the environments of Starr Carter, who is the protagonist (Tillman Jr.). In her life, she is divided between her poor neighbourhood and a wealthy school. Every scene is clear and the lenses used fitted the theme presented in each of the scenes.

In this movie, the director of cinematography enhance the storyline through his excellent visual narration techniques. The director of cinematography has the responsibility of ensuring that appropriate lighting is used in each scene (Tillman Jr.). In this movie, the director has adopted different cinematographic shots ranging from zoom shot, close up, long-short, shot as well as extreme close up shots. A long or wide shot is a closer shot is a scene taken which enables the viewers to have a better look of the scene. The images are also taken in full sizes. One of the scenes where there was a long shot is when the protagonist is captured with a group of students in Williamson Prep.

Apart from cinematography, the acting of the movie is exceptional, and each of the characters plays his/her role perfectly (Tillman Jr.). The protagonist plays her role remarkably well, and her tone differentiates her two worlds. Actors such as Hailey, Sekani Carter, Lesha and Maya have also enhanced the coerciveness of the storyline.

When the police stop Starr when going home for not signalling lane change is a phenomenon that many people have experienced. The black community feel that the police discriminate them because of their race (Tillman Jr.). What makes the scene interesting is the refusal by Khalil to turn off the music which is a common response by many young people that feel that the police discriminate them because of their race. The incident ends in sadness by the viewer's when the police officer shoots and kills Khalil. The incident represents many incidences in the United States when police have been accused of shooting and killing innocent drivers as opposed to making the right decisions by presenting the drivers before a court of law.

The movie should have been acted differently in such scenario displayed by the acting police because it creates a perception among the viewers that the police are likely to discriminate them if found to have committed a traffic offence (Tillman Jr.). The police are made to look as if they discriminate a particular community in the United States and therefore tarnishing the image of the police. The school children should not also be allowed to drive vehicles to school, and the movie should have concentrated on using the school bus to commute to and from school.

The movie goes ahead to show the prosecution of the police officer who shot Khalil and Starr testifies against the police officer in court on what happened that led to the shooting (Tillman Jr.). The case also is a representation of the challenges that the people face as they wait for their cases to be concluded and get justice. The cases take a long time to be concluded because of the many witnesses that testify for the judges to make a determination for the case.

The movie displays the police to be unqualified were the police involved in the shooting failed to follow the right criteria of investigating before taken action against any suspect (Tillman Jr.). The police officer should use the shooting as the last resort only when his life is in danger hence the script of the movie should have been designed in a manner that portrays the police performing their activities in accordance with the law. The police maintain law and order; hence they should serve as an example to the general public when enforcing the laws.

The aspects of the movie that make the movie interesting while watching the movie are the determination at which the actors of the movie had while acting where they make the movie look real. The viewers seem as if the movie is a real event that happened, not acting. The movie addresses the major concern of the relationship between the police and the people, which is a concern of the viewers.
