The Asian group has been residing in the United States since the early nineteenth century. In recent years, this group has turned to have a significant size in the ethnic collection and have shown a variety of settlement patterns and adaptation. The Asian American group is composed of different ethnic groups. The group is composed of subgroups that have diverse cultures and difference in the physical looks. The largest subgroups that make up Asian Americans are the Chinese, Filipino, and Asian Indians. There are also some other subgroups that include, Koreans, Japanese, and Vietnamese (Marger 247).

The Asian Americans form a small part of the total of the American population but the number is rapidly increasing. The increase in population is greatly attributed to the large numbers of immigrants to the United States who are of Asian origin. The members of this group mostly dwell in urban areas such as Los Angeles and New York (Marger 247). The Asian American population is observed to hold a high rank in terms of education levels, occupation, and income levels. The Asians Indians and the Chinese and Japanese groups hold the high ranks in terms of occupation such as employment and professionals. However, the rate of income of the Vietnamese is lower compared to the other groups (Marger 257). The household income of Asian American is seen to surpass that of the majority of the other minority groups. The Asian American also have a higher rate of participation in the labor force compared to the other ethnic groups.

The Asian American immigrants are the group that has received severe discrimination compared to the other immigrant ethnic group. The Asian Americans are the constant and potential victims to social and even physical abuse. The mistreatment of the Asian Americans can be dated back to the arrival of the Chinese into the West of America in the nineteenth century. The anti-Asian movement is traced to have started from the mines of California and later spread to the rest of the country (Marger 259). In this paper, we discuss the themes that show up from a YouTube video of a UCLA student expressing annoyance over Asian student behavior in the library and provide critiques over the claims made by the student with reference to what Marger states on the history and experiences of Asian Americans.

Marger discusses the various the experiences that the Asian Americans face while living in the United States, in this section, we discuss the themes that emerge from the video recorded by a UCLA student expressing her annoyance. The experiences are discussed below;

First, the large number of Asian Americans accepted to educational institutions in the United States bring agitation to students of other ethnic and racial background. The student in the video expresses annoyance in the number of Asian students that are admitted to UCLA every year. Her expression of "these hordes of Asians" shows her dissatisfaction of the number of Asians in the school. Marger describes the success of Asians in education led to the fear from the majority of whites and the other minority ethnic groups who feel that the Asians are superior to them in receiving societal recompenses (267). It is obvious that the Asian American students excel in education so as to be accepted in UCLA in large numbers and it's evident from the video that the student is annoyed of this fact. Therefore, Asian students are discriminated by other students because of their large numbers and excellence in education.

Second, Asian Americans are potential victims to verbal abuse from the other ethnic groups (Marger 268). The Asian Americans are normally at the receiving end of insults that involving their cultures, physical appearance, and beliefs. The student in the video implies that Asian Americans do not have good morals by stating that the Asians should use American manners. This is a form of verbal abuse to this group of people since it is demeaning in nature. The student abuses the Asian students by indicating that their family members such as grandparents, and parents that they brought along from Asian come to cook food for the week, do their laundry, and buy groceries for every weekend. It is also insulting to the Asian Americans when the student states that Asian American parents do not teach their children manners and how to fend for themselves. This is in line with the attacking of Vincent Chin, an Asian American in 1982 by two white autoworkers. The feud started by the two autoworkers verbally abusing Vincent Chin, who was an Engineer. One of the two autoworkers was unemployed and they attacked Chin verbally claiming that they (Asian Americans) were the reason that the unemployed man was laid off (Marger 271). It is thus evident that Asian Americans are victims of verbal abuse from the other ethnic groups in the United States.

Third, the Asian Americans are viewed as dirty and immoral by the negative ethnic stereotypes. The Asian Americans are normally described by the other ethnic groups as people who lack moral standards. The stereotypic classification of the Asian Americans is said to have originated from the role that they played on the labor and their accompanying effect on the labor market (Marger 276). In the video, the negative stereotyping is evident. The student classifies the Asian Americans as people who lack morals since they are not taught moral values by their parents. The student also says that the Asian Americans come with the whole of their families from Asia and the members are regular visitors to the schools' residence to cook, shop, and do laundry. The student also classifies Asians as the people who regularly talk on their phones in the library at almost regular intervals. Asian Americans are normally referred by the stereotypes as " not willing to integrate into the American culture", and the common statement of "try to be like Americans" (Lee 40-50), which evidently comes up when the student in the video addresses Asian Americans telling them that in America people do not receive or make phone calls in the library . Finally, the student thinks that all the Asian students make calls to see if their families are affected by tsunamis, this is an extreme show of negative ethnic stereotypic behavior. It is therefore clear that Asian Americans face negative ethnic stereotypic behavior from Americans from the other ethnic origins.

Lastly, Asian American students receive racial bias and discrimination from fellow students in educational institutions (Marger 268). In the video, the student who studies with Asian American students profiles the latter as having some category of behavior. The fact that the student who is white American, says that all the Asian American students who live around her bring their whole families from Asian and they come every weekend to do laundry and cook food is indeed racial bias. The student also says that in all cases of people receiving and making calls in the library are the Asian Americans and adds that they do this at intervals of five to fifteen minutes. Such stereotypic behavior is bound to bring them emotional distress and conflicts with the students from the other racial and ethnic background. These events have led to having a lot of critical psychological and emotional issues that are not usually addressed among the Asian American students (Lee 50-65). In conclusion, many Asian American students are racially discriminated by students of other racial background leading to emotional concerns that may result in conflict among these students.

Conclusion

Asian Americans experience bias because of their racial and ethnic background in the United States. Students who are of Asian origin are discriminated by fellow students in educational institutions which in most cases leads to emotional and psychological issues among these students. Racial discrimination is also likely to result in conflicts among the students in the institutions. The discrimination majorly relates to the culture and behavior of Asian Americans. The Asian Americans also face negative ethnic stereotypic behavior from the other races and ethnic groups. Asian Americans are normally viewed as people who have low moral standards and are often given titles that imply that they should assimilate American behavior. Names such as "try to be like Americans" and "not willing to integrate into American culture" are commonly referred to the Asian Americans. Asian Americans experience verbal abuse from the members of other racial and ethnic backgrounds. The other races and ethnicities have a tendency of insulting and demeaning the members of the Asian American group. Finally, the high rate of Asian Americans that are admitted to educational institutions in the United States every year brings discomfort to the other racial and ethnic groups. The annoyance is because of feeling that they are receiving competition from the Asian Americans. It is therefore evident that Asian Americans experience discrimination and have to deal with negative ethnic stereotypic behavior from people who belong to other racial and ethnic groups.
