Introduction

The human resource department remains a crucial element of employee well-being within businesses, regardless of their scope and size. The key responsibility of the human resource department is overseeing human resource management, which includes hiring, ensuring that the organization is up to date with the federal and state tax laws, as well as payroll and employee benefits. In defining human resource management, it is imperative to start by understanding the concept of human resources. On a broad scope, human resources translate to people within an organization. It has, however, been defined differently by different management experts. For instance, it has been defined as a set of interdependent, interacting, and interrelated ethical, psychological, sociological, and physiological components (Jackson, Schuler & Werner, 2009). Human resources provide creative abilities, skills, knowledge, attitudes, and talents obtained within the population, and from the perspective of a specific organization, human resources represent the acquired skills and knowledge, as well as the inherent abilities illustrated in the aptitude and talent of its personnel. Human resources might also refer to the human capital within an organization.

With the definition of human resources apparent, it is easier to define human resource management. In its simplest form, human resource management refers to the process of making effective and efficient use of human resources in an attempt to ensure that the goals and objectives of the organization are achieved (Jackson, Schuler & Werner, 2009). It is the organizing, planning, controlling, and maintenance of human resources to a point when personal, social, and organizational goals and objectives are achieved. Human resource management is an essential aspect of any organization that is related to how individuals work and how this relates to the entire organization. It aims at reconciling and developing into an efficient organization comprising of individuals who make up an organization and have regard for the well-being of the organization and individuals working in it.

More often, human resource management is related to the dimensions of individuals within an organization. Given the fact that every organization comprises of individuals, obtaining their services, growing their skills, and motivating them to achieve higher performance will ensure that they continue maintaining their commitment to the company- the organizational aspects which are essential for accomplishing the objectives and goals of the organization. To that end, human resource management can be defined as a process involved with procurement, development, and maintenance of competent and reliable human resources within the organization to ensure that the goals and objectives of the organization are accomplished in the best efficient and effective manner possible (Legge, 1995). It is an art of managing individuals within the work environment in such a fashion that ensures that they strive for the betterment of the organization. The internship project aims at providing with an overview of an internship program I attended at the human resource department of the Emirates Group, providing with the structure of the organization as well as its corporate structure, performance management, staffing policy, and human resource planning at the company. The report also provides with an overview of the critical issues facing the company and proceeds to recommend some solutions.

Company Overview

The Emirates Group is a multinational tourism and travel holding company headquartered in Dubai, United Arabs Emirates. The Emirates Group is the parent company of the Emirates Airline, which operates a broad network of international air cargo and passenger services on a global level. On the overall, the Emirates Group can be said to engage in commercial air transportation and operates through Catering Operations, Airline, as well as additional segments. The commercial air transportation services offered by the Emirates Group include excess baggage, cargo, and passenger services. This segment is also involved with the retail and wholesale of the consumer goods; hotel operations; sale of beverages and food; as well as institutional and in-flight catering operations. Also, Emirates Group offers aircraft handling, online travel services, passenger meet and greet, load control, mail handling, bakery and food, aircraft cleaning, cargo handling, as well as travel agency services. Currently, the Emirates Group operates in Africa, the Americas, the Indian Ocean, West Asia, and the Gulf and the Middle East. In addition to the aforementioned segments, the Emirates Group has strategic alliances with other airlines such as South African Airways.

The Emirates Group was initially founded in the year 1985 and has developed into one of the world's largest multinational carriers. The company's operations are mainly conducted at the Dubai International Airport. With an all-wide body fleet of aircraft, the Emirates Group is wholly operated by the Government of Dubai, and throughout time, it has developed diversity in its business portfolio, covering a broad range of segments in the tourism and travel sectors.

Organizational Structure

An organizational structure has been defined as the system that is applied when describing the hierarchy within organizations. This description identifies the jobs available within the organization, as well as the functions and where they report to in the organization. The organizational structure is often developed in an attempt to determine the operations of the organization, and helps in the achievement of organizational goals, resulting in future growth. An organizational chart is used in illustrating the organizational structure of a company.

There exist various types of organizational structures, with each being developed to meet the unique needs of the respective organizations. Among the structures include a matrix, geographical, divisional, and functional. In the case of the Emirates Group, the company has a tall and hierarchical structure. At the top, there is the Chairman, followed by the Vice Presidents, the Executive Secretaries, Senior Vice President, Divisional Vice President, Regional Managers, Area Managers, the Heads of Departments, and Supervisors.

Organizational Chart

The Chairman is also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), which the highest ranking individual within the group. The responsibility of the Chairman mainly involves overseeing the overall success of the organization and making top-level management decisions. Often, the Chairman asks for input from the Vice Presidents and Executive Secretaries, but the authority to make the final decisions lies with them. Since inception, the Emirates Group has operated under the leadership of HH Sheikh Ahmed as the Chairman.

Methodology of Study

The research methodology section aims at providing with an overview of the steps and actions implemented in investigating a research problem and providing a rationale for the techniques and procedures applied in the identification, selection, processing, and analysis of information that has been used in shedding more light into the problem. The main aims of the methodology section include identifying how data was generated and collected, as well as how it was analyzed. There exist four main elements of a research methodology. They are the design, sampling, data collection, and data analysis. This report is descriptive and applies both primary and secondary research methods.

Problem Statement

This project is an internship report on Human Resource concentration completed at the Emirates Group. The report focuses on providing an overview of the critical human resource issues facing the organization and provides with recommendations for the potential solutions that can be implemented in addressing these issues. Working as an intern in the Human Resource Department of the Emirates Group, I prepared this report based on the broad discussion with employees in the organization, as well as customers.
