The Dead: Love's Unfulfilled Longing for Gabriel and Gretta - Essay Sample

In the book The Dead, love does not work well for Gabriel and his wife, Gretta. Gretta is a kind and well-natured woman. She disliked Dublin, which his husband liked most who saw interest in things like galoshes to be ridiculous (Norris 35). Gretta told him the story of her first love that was known as Michael Furey during the party night. According to Gretta, Michael Furey died for her sake, and because of this reason, she was troubled by her past. She could not make it to find passion and love is present. Therefore this portrayed that g did not love Gabriel. She just had dead love for him.

During the dinner party held by Kate, Gabriel and his wife were the most favorite nephews. The other relatives were so eager to see them arrive. As soon as they arrived, Gabriel tried to chat Lily, who snaps to his question about her love (Norris 35.3). Gabriel terminated the harsh exchange by offering Lily a kind tip; however, the experience made him anxious. This portrayed that He later relaxed when he joined his wife and aunt though Gretta's dedication to galoshes teased him. They later discussed they stay at a hotel rather than making a long trip back home. This dialogue was interrupted by the arrival of ever drunken Freddy Malins (Norris 35). This shows that Gabriel's wife did not love him since she did not want to discuss with, and she went ahead and disappointed him in the hotel where she did not like to share romantic inclination.

During the party, when the piano was played a dead love of Gabriel and Gretta is shown as Gabriel pairs with Miss Ivors who was one of his fellow university instructors instead of pairing with his fiance Gretta (Norris 35). After the piano play their paring never ended there as Miss Ivors embarrassed Gabriel for writing conservative reviews in a newspaper. Gabriel tries to make some engagement with Miss Ivors for few minutes hence showing some lack of love to his fiance Gretta. Such a case clearly showed dead love between the two couples.

The couple further showed the signs of dead love during the end of the party, where Gretta was mystically moody. This is shown where Gabriel remembers the story about his horse and grandfather which made them in a circle even the time they were out of the mill (Norris 35). Immediately when he was done with narration of the story, he realized that Gretta had a transfixed stand from the song which Mr. Bartell sings in their drawing room. Gretta remembered their courtship when they trudged from their home and held a cab into Dublin.

While the two couples are at the hotel, a sign of dead love is identified where Gabriel is irritated by the behavior of his love Gretta (Norris 35). At this particular situation Gretta seemed not to be willing to share his romantic inclinations with Gabriel and she truly bursts into tears with no good reason of it. Instead of showing love to Gabriel, she confessed her love to Michael a boy who used to sung love song which they were singing during the party. Even though Michael was no longer alive, Gretta had love to him. Such scenario made Gabriel to remain awake contemplating on his own mortality (Norris 35). He actually saw a snow in his house window and his envisions and lastly he had to blanket the graveyard of Michael and too that of Ireland.

Compare William Butler Yeats "When You Are Old" and "Leda and the Swan"

Yeast's work takes two directions, where much of its content is romantic, which is also represented well in the poem Wild Swans. William Butner paints a realistic nature locale and contemplates the benefit of beauty (Ross 43). The two poems possess more comparisons than differences.

An obvious link can be created in Leda, and The Swan, which is more is more of contrast than comparison. The swan represents brutality as the poet says, brute blood of air. However, relevant scrutiny of the way he explains the animal's beauty in both poems can bring insightful ideas, even when he uses symbolic birds in different paths.

The second stanza replicates Leda's idea among school children. The speaker dreams about the body of Ledaean, according to the second stanza. He considers the weak innocence of children and repeats it to swan in the third stanza (Ross 43). However, the narrative of this poem happens in the contemporary, real-world of the poet as well as Leda and Swan is a remembrance of classical Greek myth. Both poems examine nasty human realities. In the point of view, both poems give a cynical sadness.

The Easter 1916 and the second coming take a pessimistic perspective of human society, and they both escalate heavily during trope of birth. Yeats discusses terrible beauty beings three times during Easter and the second coming (Ross 43). He finalized the poem in the rough beast image on the way to Bethlehem, where it will be born. Both poems investigate a terrible prospect of the future, and both give a slight possibility of hope.

The preceding being is much personal expression of endearment, and the latter being expresses the nationalism of Irish. The second one can be contrasted to some other highly cynical poems, of which the target is a distinct political matter (Ross 43).
