Currently, organizations work with people of different race, culture, age, gender, ethnic groups, and religion. It is the role of the management to ensure that all these integrate harmoniously; it should fit well within the organization and coordinated well in such a way that the abilities and talents of the workforce are optimally used. Skillful management of these differences can lead to competitive advantage in an organization ( Zhang, Fan, Caspers, Heim, Song, Liu, & Jiang, 2017). Many organizations are working towards the creation of an environment whereby diversity and differences in culture are considered and where their employees work with good faith.
Cultural diversity issues can be shown through communication breakdown and interpersonal conflict in an organization. Behaviors and communication are different from one individual to another (Zang et al. 2017). An individual who is an introvert prefers to work independently while an extrovert can work for a team, through an understanding of various employees the company will be in a position to achieve their set objectives. Firms should ensure that they take time to listen to every team member and consider their opinions. Similarly, they should be in a position to instill a feeling that each employee is valued.
To obtain success in managing multicultural workforce one should understand and be aware of the majority and minority cultures within the organization. In this case, the chief operating officer should manage these effectively through the following ways: Defining organizational values and policies, the chief operating officer of Lablog Company should decide on essential policies and ethics within the organization. This can be achieved by defining the objectives of the organization, the image you want to portray and should apply efficiently to cultural diversity at the workplace (Velten & Lashley, 2018). The chief operating officer should determine the type of workforce that they require in the future and their characteristics that is vital for the performance.
The chief operating officer should also adopt an employee relationship management, through programs such as language teaching, setting aside cultural days, a celebration of different religions, setting up traditional holidays for employees and involving employee families into some activities in the company (Cascio, 2018). The managers of the company should know the personalities and background of the people in the company.
Additionally, the chief operating officer should develop management and training programs, this will ensure effective management of diverse employees with a different culture. The training schedules can consist of across the culture training which can enable managers to appreciate different cultures which will, in turn, enable them to learn about different cultural practices so that they can obtain skills on how to deal with cultural issues. By doing this, the company will be in a position to mitigate losses that arise from cultural differences.
Optimization of cultural diversity training helps in understanding and viewing things different mannerly through reflection and realization. Training should be for employees, management, and supervisors (Cascio, 2018). The managers can integrate it into the current supervisory training. One can apply teaching methods such as role play, video, theatre, questions and group discussions. The Chief operating officer can also make use of a language bank; whereby workers are made to interpret a wide range of languages for other workers and translators. These promote better understanding among employees.
