Research conducted between families whose partners are separated and those whose partners are still married; indicated that most of the women from divorced families turn to alcohol in their next years after the divorce. These have been linked to the psychological distress they face as a result of divorce. These women get limited support towards providing for their children; this causes even changes in their social behaviour. Men, on the other hand, are reported to re-marry in the shortest time compared to women, but they also face psychological issues such as a drop in their self-esteem.

Two intervention methods were proposed, namely; in-school programs and community-based programs all customized to cater for both parents and children. In conclusion, divorce has adverse effects, both long-term and short-term in the lives of both the parents and children from a divorced family.

Adverse Effects on Children

Divorce affects the emotional health of a child by causing stress and anxiety. These children are also more likely to adapt trust issues with other people or even their peers as their parents are ever arguing, threatening their sense of security. A study was conducted in 1998 by over four years, a combination of approximately 241 families had gone through split up (Eaton 2018). Eaton (2018) found out that children whose families had undergone divorce were more likely to have a high level of stress and other emotional disorders compared to families with both parents intact. This is explained because these children from divorced families experience internal conflict, depression, and lower self-esteem during this period of parental separation, and these results mare adheres for quite some time.

The journal also argues that divorce results in a negative impact on children with divorced parents. It brings about consequences such as increased aggressiveness and poor communication skills. The article states that children pick these traits from their parents as divorcing parents might argue and show to their children poor problem-solving strategies. Another explanation for these negative social health traits is that parents tend to be harsh on their children in such instances of divorce. Men, on the other hand, experience psychological issues such as a drop in their self-esteem and limited trust to other people, especially women.

Intervention Methods

The journal proposes two intervention methods. In-school programs focus on utilizing the school set up to nurture, support and counsel these children whose parents have divorced. The programs in this category aim at improving the mental status and associations of these children with their parents. There are also community-based methods that aim at supporting divorced adults. Their objective is to help them gain psychological stability and prevent alcohol abuse as a renowned character for the divorced.
