While undertaking a course on the introduction to fields of addiction, I understand that the course is about the issues surrounding the use, and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. I am also to take an in-depth analysis of the causal factors, drug types and descriptions, the laws behind the taking of these drugs, socio-economic effects of the drugs to the individuals and the society, and the measures put across to prevent, intervene and treat individuals who have fallen victims of these substances. The course is designed to offer me, as a student a learning experience through the competency-based education (CBE), a strategy or instead approach that will present me with learning activities like discussion boards, researches, classroom presentation, literature readings and active participation and interaction with the community. I am hoping to gain in-depth insight on the impact of drug use, abuse, and addictions have on society, the availability and types of treatments associated for recovery of addictions not only the drug but with other addictions such as alcohol and gambling. I am also looking forward to evaluating the positive effects of treatment can have not only on the abuser but also their family, employment, and society as a whole.

It is expected of me, that by the end of this course, I should be in a favorable position to outline the philosophies surrounding the different aspects of drug abuse, the methods employed when designing a research on drug abuse, and create a practical link between the misuse of drugs and the socio-economic, political and cultural aspects of society. I am also expected to familiarize with the risks, resilience, history, prevalence, incidence, alongside the behavioral, psychological, physical health and social effects of engaging in psychoactive drugs. Last but not least, it would be crucial to be equipped with the signs, symptoms, and causes of addictions while backing these up with the philosophies, policies, and practices tied to abusing drugs. The diagnostic part will require mastery of the interdisciplinary approaches and criteria employed while dealing with the diagnosing of substance abuse disorders.

I am hereby reminded the cliche work hard, and you'll get ahead. With each of the aforementioned learning activities, among others I am going to mention, comes an aggregate maximum attainable point of 1,000. The discussion board entails the converging of different experiences within the class setting, and it takes center stage with 400 points up for grabs, ten points at forty each. It calls for an extensive involvement in the required texts and responding to four posts from other students on two different days. Syllabus review paper earns 30 points with the assignment requiring a two-page APA formatted review on the syllabus requirement. A journal article review has 100 points whereby I am expected to present a peer-reviewed article on current drugs and substance abuse coverage, make a 3-5 page summary of it, and submit it through the discussion board for a review. Self-help group reaction paper or significant event paper is having 200 points, and I am expected to choose one of the two. Having selected a significant event paper, I am supposed to pick a significant event related to drugs, explore the issues surrounding the event in a 5-7 page paper and a limitation of four sources from reliable articles. I have to accomplish this by the 22nd October by 11:59. Quizzes earn me up to 20 points. The mid-term exam carries 100 points while the final exam has 150 points. The grades range from 971-1000 for an A+ while 628-0 attracts an F.

Conclusion

With all the assignment details adequately presented to me, I have to be as well aware of the technicalities involved in partaking in these assessments, among the late submission of assignments, plagiarism, and extra credit. For this particular course, there is no extra credit. Plagiarized work attracts an undebatable F and forwarding of my name to the university judiciary committee for further disciplinary action. Late assignments draw a daily deduction of 10% for the first four days, and denial for submission after four days are over. There are no makeovers, and it is therefore up to me to ensure I bit all deadlines, and if possible submit my assignment earlier than stipulated. The right channels will guarantee me my right grades, and for this reason, all assignments must be submitted exclusively via the Safe Assignment, after which I should ensure I get a confirmation on the submission. It is up to me to ensure my devices are compatible with the available academic platforms like Blackboard and discussion board among others.
