Innovation is simply the process of bringing up or producing a new idea or product. It requires the use of new or modified/invented methods to produce a completely new product or idea. In the business sector, companies have always focused on improving their innovative technique one way or another. For instance by using new technology in their production processes, hiring more innovative or potentially innovative employees, hiring professional consultants to advise on innovative ways to name a few. Therefore, as companies concentrate on business innovation, employees to have the opportunity to be innovative (Cohen, 2000). Different reasons empower employees to work on improving their innovative skills just like business enterprises. The most common reasons are to: increase their knowledge, increase their wage/salary level, to acquire more skills hence be more qualified and valued in the market, to qualify for a certain reward or recognition, produce their own product/service or idea, go gain a competitive advantage in the market etc. (Burto, 2012, pg. 16-24). Personally, the reason that would motivate me to work more innovatively in my job is mainly to acquire new knowledge and skills hence increase my market qualification rates, in order for me to produce a new product or idea on my own and to increase my salary level. These reasons not only help me grow and improve my personality and career goals and objective but also help me to be more productive in my assigned responsibilities in the workplace. Thus, personal innovation enhances both personal and business development and success.
Business managers and close supervisors are often involved in ensuring employee motivation in the workplace. Essentially, when an employee is often being motivated by their managers, their productivity increases and so does their performance which in the long-run causes an impact on the performance of the whole organization (Cohen, 2000). Assuming that I am a part-time junior employee in an international charity organization, I have more than four managers to oversee my work. My supervisors/managers would often search for different ways to find and locate new donors and funds for various projects. In that case, a manager may be looking for a way to identify long-term donors as well as maintain the current donors. In most cases, such responsibilities are given to the senior employees but this time, the manager hopes to promote three junior employees (depending on the best option to solve the issue) into the senior position. Therefore, I will innovatively strive to produce the best idea and solution for the issue. Basically, my idea will focus on ensuring that the solutions are not only effective but also long-term solutions like opt to keep in continuous touch with the current donors, bring fundraising into the digital age and make advertisements to targeted groups of people. This skill of being more innovative will certainly give me the chance to be considered for the promotion which means salary increase and acquiring more knowledge for my field.
Different employees are highly motivated by different things toward innovation. On a personal level, the thing that generally increases my motivation toward innovation is the fact that through innovation, I will certainly gain more knowledge on the field of focus. Considering my education, my intention is to find better ways to achieve good performance and in the end graduate with a good grade. Nevertheless, the fact that I have the potential to succeed and acquire a good and regarding job after school contributes to my motivation levels as well.
On the other hand, assuming I was employed in an international charity organization, my motivation would be more focused on my career development and personal growth. Essentially, in the field of associating with charity donors, I will be able to understand the most professional ways to carry out a conversation with them, inform them of the organization's developments and the best ways their donations are being utilized. Therefore, acquiring more knowledge and skills on a certain field is my major motivator. Additionally, my innovation motivation is also influenced by a promise of salary increase and the possibility of promotion. These are promises that are often used to measure how much pressure a person can take simply because there is competition involved. Furthermore, they are used as tools to determine whether an employee can complete their responsibility and succeed. In this case, my desire is to succeed and get that recognition through promotion or salary increase. Therefore, it enables me to fully implement y innovative skills in the responsibility given with the aim of being the best performer.
For business organizations, Innovation can be crucial for its business operations expansion, product/service quality improvement, product differentiation and product development among other things (Kalyani, 2011). For an employee/individual, motivational innovation can be a source for starting a business or inventing an already existing product/service to fit the market. Personally, my innovative skills can be very helpful in identifying different business opportunities in the world and give me an economic advantage. The opportunities mostly originate from the disappointments received from the already existing businesses, therefore, end up becoming the surviving seeds for effective and successful innovation. For instance, challenges that are associated with identifying potential donors and maintaining the current donors in my charity organization can be classified as a business opportunity. I can use this opportunity to create a media or networking platform whereby all charity donors from all over the world can meet and interact with each other. This platform can also serve as a medium for both the charity managers and other additional organizations to associate and share information among other things. This is certainly an innovative way to become entrepreneurs by creating businesses using the available opportunities in the market.
