Introduction
Political competence is an imperative phenomenon that a doctoral nursing program (DNP) leader should have to enhance his/her roles' performance in the workplace environment. Political competence allows a DNP leader to know what he/she can control, when or how to take action and to anticipate any form of performance agenda in the workplace environment. In the field of nursing, political competence enables a DNP leader to have the right skills, values, and perspectives required for ideal political involvement in the nursing profession's roles. As such, it is a quality that is imperative in the nursing profession, particularly; in promoting a DNP's leadership performance in executing his/her managerial function.
The purpose statement in this project is the development of a proficient political competency plan for a DNP practice scholar to promote his/her leadership proficiency in directing operations among junior personnel in the DNP organizational environment. The value of the political competency development plan will be the enhancement of role performance in supporting the professional formation of a DNP practice scholar. A DNP practice scholar has a key role in political advocacy, which entails lobbying for changes that might impact the overall performance of nursing stakeholders in an institution's DNP.
Nursing Expertise and Health Policy Advocacy
Value of Nursing Expertise in Health Policy
Nursing expertise is the aspect of having expansive knowledge in certain a field of the medical profession. Such expertise is acquired through prolonged execution of assigned nursing duties in an organization and in the process amercing substantial experience. Nursing expertise is imperative in health policy because it enables medical practitioners to identify the crucial areas of the nursing practice that require policy amendment to enhance their performance. In this case, the determination of such policy areas is largely dependent on the level of clinical expertise that an individual has and his/her ability to translate his/her theoretical knowledge into actionable policy.
Value of Nursing Expertise in Health Policy-Making
Nursing expertise is imperative in healthcare policy development because it enables DNP leaders to make rational clinical decisions that are non-biased with personal opinions, while still grasping the nature of the clinical situation. Additionally, having ideal clinical expertise means that a nursing leader has attained proficiency as well as the judgment that a clinician can acquire over time, through his/her clinical experience and professional practice. Additionally, such a heightened standard of experience allows a leader with nursing expertise to make legislation that can promote the overall success of a healthcare organization or a nursing program.
Impact of Social Determinants on Health, Wellness, and Policy
Social interactions between different stakeholders in a healthcare environment promote the attainment of improved health, wellness and policy development. Additionally, a DNP leader should learn how to identify the social determinants that can promote change among his/her followers in the workplace environment as a strategy to enhance their overall welfare while in the healthcare environment. In this case, a good social interaction at the workplace promotes the overall health and wellness of workers and patients in medical organizations. From a different perspective, the sustenance of a good social environment enables nursing leaders to create effective policies that promote the overall success of an organization.
Self-Reflection on the Strengths and Strategy Plan
Reflection of Personal Strengths
There are several strengths that I possess and which I can utilize to promote my leadership proficiencies in the DNP. Such skills are inclusive of effective communication skills, which enables me to create good interactions with other nursing practitioners in the DNP. Additionally, through effective communication, I can empower others to adopt a policy change, which could be beneficial to an organization. Also, the effective skill of being an efficient communicator allows me to manage any opposition to change that could be manifested by other nursing personnel in the DNP program.
Persistence is also an efficient skill that I possess, which can promote my leadership abilities in the DNP program. In reference to persistence, I am dedicated to executing various roles that may be assigned to me. Additionally, I achieve this by creating a time plan and setting strategic goals that guide me in executing the desired objectives. Moreover, the qualities that define my persistence skills are inclusive of diligence, thoroughness, hard work, and working for long hours. The third leadership strength that I possess is relationship development and collaboration.
In respect to the stated strength, I can cultivate a culture of inclusivity where all persons under my leadership can function collaboratively in executing various functions. In this case, building such relationships is beneficial to an organizational setting because it ensures that different preset objectives are achieved easily through the collaboration of efforts. Also, by being able to foster collaboration in a group, I can attain new ideas from individual suggestions or ideas contributed by each member of the team. Subsequently, this facilitates the timely attainment of solutions to various issues that may affect a group.
Competency Development Plan
Persistence
There are four primary undertakings that I will develop to ensure that I promote my leadership competencies as a DNP leader. The first undertaking will be persistence which entails being very consistent in executing all political roles or responsibilities that may be assigned to me. In this case, I will also use personal intelligence to ensure that I coordinate different functions on my assigned roles as a strategy of achieving the desired political objectives. To me, a "win" is the successful attainment of all my desired political objectives after a prolonged period of executing self-promotion campaigns meant to build my brand among the targeted audience. Furthermore, I will also consider a "win" to be the ability to inspire others in the society positively, into becoming better people, even despite not attaining what I hoped to get after going through the political process.
Use of Persuasion
Refining my skill of persuasion is also a primary undertaking that I would like to achieve as part of my political ambition plan. Persuasion is the skill that entails persuading others to become part of the desired objective (Hoy & Smith, 2007). In the political context, it would entail encouraging people from a particular targeted demographic to join a leader and to support his/her manifesto. Through being a persuasive leader, I will be able to influence the actions of others by changing their mindset and behavior. On a political stance, I would consider myself to be a persuasive leader if would be able to persuade a size population to follow my policies meant for public welfare or development. Additionally, being persuasive will enable me to achieve my desired goals more efficiently, as I will be able to convince a sizeable population to team up with me to achieve a common objective.
Communication and Relationship Management
Effective communication and relationship management is also a quality that I will strive to achieve to promote my leadership competencies when working with my political team. In this case, effective communication will ensure that I can communicate about my political ambitions sufficiently to my group supporters. Subsequently, this will ensure that all the team's efforts are channeled towards the desired direction in order to secure the desired objectives. Additionally, my implementation of relationship management entails the identification, analysis as well as management of relationships with persons that are inside or outside my group or team. The excellence in relationship management will enable me to be in a position to influence both my political supporters and opposition in order to reach a common group where they can accept or tolerate my leadership styles. Nevertheless, to attain relationship management skills, I will need to nurture competencies such as teamwork, conflict management, collaboration, and influence.
Networking
Networking can be characterized to be the art of meeting different people and creating beneficial relationships with them (Burbaugh & Kaufman, 2017; Cullen-Lester, Woehler & Willburn, 2016). To advance my political goals, networking is among the aspects of leadership that I feel I will need to develop. Additionally, in the networks that I will create, I will strive to obtain positive information from such groups, which will aid me in advancing my political goals. Nevertheless, it will be essential to use critical thinking to determine which types of networks are beneficial or supportive of my political goals and the networks that should be discarded. Also, good networking will also build my confidence as a leader and allow me to attain different perspectives or ideas to leadership, which could promote my overall political growth. Lastly, through good networking, I will manage to cultivate long-lasting relationships with allies that could help me sustain my political leadership for a long time.
