According to Stewart (2012), intimacy entails to the special connection and relation that ensues from close relationships which are considered by the feeling of a cordial act, deep friendship and ultimate trust. This week's reading provides interesting insight into relationships and how to communicate with friends, family, and intimate partners. When I read these resources particularly on intimacy, I get to me thinking about the relationships I have had with family members and friends who I love unconditionally.
Intimacy is not necessarily a sexual relation to another person but to me, it is the establishment of beneficial relationships through an emotional connection with people I love. In communication, interactions perform a vital role in establishing sustainable intimacy because it is via interaction that I can make my close relationships work (Stewart, 2012). Many individuals might find it a daunting task to forge intimacy. I have also had difficulties in conveying certain information to keep an open intimacy which becomes a challenge for me to connect with some people. When I first met my partner, I did not know whether he would find it easy to be with me. I was quite unsure about him because sometimes I tend not to trust people and I rarely share a lot with someone unless I create an intimacy with them. According to Burly-Allen (1995), meeting people for the first time one might 'size up' their personality which leads to lack of trust but it might also get worse when we retain this kind of negativity.
When it comes to disseminating intimacy, it is essential to open up and let other people know of your intentions. While getting to know my partner, I remained cautious not to reveal too much of information. Stewart (2012) posit that intimacy is not only created with verbal impressions but also with positive participation and immediacy behavior. I had sometimes felt that I should let my partner know everything about me. My relationship grew over time and based on patience and being true to each other, we managed to create intimacy through mutual understanding.
Conclusion
According to my personality test of Uniquely You, I am the kind of person who is easy to love and I return I easily love back. It is a fundamental characteristic to possess when one needs to develop intimacy since it is an avenue to communicate effectively with others. It is always a concern for me to know what people think of me and how I am criticized by the public to know if they would accept me. In building my faith journey, I have acknowledged that intimacy is quite essential since I need more spiritual connection with God. In Jeremiah 33:3 (KJV), the Lord asks us to call unto him and he would answer all the tough questions we have in our lives, and we shall prosper in greater heights and know things we have no knowledge about. I will consistently pray to God to help me in my communications to help me enhance my relationships with my family and friends. I also believe God expresses his intimacy with those who have faith in him.
