Introduction
The proposed wood technology design project is subject to various challenges which include time, cost, availability of resources, and the specific requirements necessary for the project. For instance, the element of time possesses a problem as the project is limited to a particular period whereby it entails completion within a specific schedule. In this case, it is essential to develop a work schedule that allows the completion of the project effectively as well as providing adequate time to complete the portfolio, assignments, and also have time to study for the examinations. The schedule provides enough time such that the general outcome of the design does not compromise the quality of the design. Therefore, the schedule will be achievable and realistic. Since I began developing the idea on 20th October 2017, the project ought to be complete by Thursday week 4 of term 3 2018, the 16th of August.
The element of cost possesses a challenge on the project as the budget required to complete the project may not be affordable. Besides, the cost of a project is usually a critical factor in planning and managing any project therein. However, in this project, the significant concerns in producing a high-quality design rather than concentrating on the total cost of the project. This is enhanced by incorporating various relevant course concepts and utilizing high-quality materials such as timber. Although cost limits the completion of most of the project, it is not a fundamental hindrance in this design project. In this case, the planned budget amount to 700 dollars. The high cost is as a result of the high cost of acquiring quality materials. Nonetheless, my parents are financing the entire project.
Consequently, the availability of resources is also a fundamental limitation of most projects. Nevertheless, resources differ depending with the project therein. In this design, in particular, the resource limitation entails tools and equipment, technical skills in design, materials such as timber, capabilities, and the available human resource. Despite the potential challenges, the project plan entails various ways to encounter these limitations. For instance, based on the fact that I have been enrolled in a workshop related class, it is easy to apply the abilities to complete the design effectively. Besides, the class grants technical knowledge and expertise appropriate in utilizing the available tools and equipment effectively. Thus, it is almost assured that the available capabilities are useful in developing a quality design. Besides, in case of complications, the teacher's guideline is always available. Alongside the class capabilities, I possess the necessary skills required to complete the project. I will incorporate the skills developed during the industrial technology. Furthermore, the final report and results of this engagement provide adequate proof that I am determined to dedicated effort and the necessary input required to deliver a quality project. As a result, it will aid in utilizing the available skills as well as providing room for further development.
The availability of materials creates a limitation to the project. Following the need to use environmentally friendly materials that are capable of recycling, it limits the probability of acquiring these materials from a reliable and credible source as it narrows the available options therein. Nevertheless, based on my desire to conduct an environment-friendly approach, I am determined to sacrifice and produce a high-quality design despite this challenge. Although the availability of human resources is a limitation to practical completion of a project, my class teacher will provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and expertise sufficient to create a high-quality design. Thus, when faced with many challenges, I will utilize the guideline from the class teacher. Furthermore, I can also talk to other experts in the field to acquire the necessary advice through the various stages of the project. For instance, I can request for more information from the sources or suppliers that provide materials.
In developing the design, it is also essential to consider the specific requirements of the project. In this case, therefore, while developing the two leveled bar, I will ensure that the size is suitable such that it accommodates an adult standing. Thus, the appropriate using measurement is necessary. It will be enhanced by researching to determine the estimate measurements that can accommodate an average adult. As a result, it will aid in developing a two leveled bar design that is functional.
Ideally, the core intention of the project is to develop high quality, functional, and aesthetic design. For this reason, I need to research various requirements that propel the achievement of this intention above. Therefore, the following procedure outlines the fundamental criteria necessary in conducting the research that will boost the success of a functional and an aesthetic two leveled bar.
Materials: utilizing quality materials translating to the developments of a high-quality design. In this case, I intend to used quality timber that creates a quality two leveled bar. Thus the wood used should be suitable for the design and have the ability to be regularly used (recycling). Further, the timber should support efficient finishing such that it is easy to integrate into the project. Since the design aims at parquetry art, it will use contrasting timbers. Also, while acquiring the materials, I will ensure that the timber results to less or no possible effect on the environment. For this reason, it should have the capability to reuse in future. Also, I will scrutinize the sources to ensure the suppliers are reliable and credible. For this project, I can acquire timber from various credible sources such as Anagote Special Timbers, Bunnings, and Marshall's Timbers. I can also source timber from friends that are willing to sell any available old and recyclable timbers.
Joints: The project will incorporate strong joints that contribute to the quality and aesthetic aspects on the design. The joints should provide an opportunity to showcase the technical skills in the workshop field. In order to add to the artistic outlook of the design, the joints should be visible from the outside of the bar. Moreover, the joints utilized should be functional to enhance the functionality of the resulting design. In developing the two leveled bar, it will incorporate the various types of joints. A but joint is majorly used on structural frames since it is weak and thus requires reinforcement. The miter joint is somewhat weak but can be reinforced to develop a curved joint that adds to the aesthetic design of the bar. It is placed using the 45o angles. The half lap joint is strong and thus applicable on frame variations, decoration and boosting the aesthetic view. The dovetail joint suitable on frames has a high tensile strength, and it can be used permanently. A housing joint is strong and thus sued in developing supporting rails. The rebate joint is similar to the but joint but it has a groove cut at one of the timber granting it more strength than the but joint. It is also used on structural frames. The tongue and groove joints work together in frames and rails. Usually, dominos and biscuits act as joining techniques to enhance the strength and stability of the joints. Subsequently, a laminating joint entails the process of gluing various components of the timber to increase the width of the design. It is applicable on the alternating woods that enhance the aesthetic view of the design.
Finishes: The project will incorporate a durable finish that adds to not only the aesthetic outlook of the design but also the functionality. Additionally, the finish should have the ability to withstand the regular use of the project.
Processes: Along the project, the various decisions are based on each stage of the processes available. In this case, it will provide an opportunity to showcase as many skills to scoop the highest marks possible. While executing the processes, I will take into account the safety and regulatory measures, the available skills, capabilities, and the availability of tools and equipment. This will allow a chance to conduct the projects with considerable expertise and knowledge. Consequently, the processes should aim at contributing to the high quality and an aesthetic outlook of the resulting design.
Hardware: The design requires the integration of various components such as the 2nd level of the bar. However, the decision criteria in selecting these components will depend on the strength, quality, sustainability, and the artistic contributions they make on the resulting design.
Conclusion
The research findings show that, in gluing the timber, one can incorporate various types of glues that are durable, sustainable, and strong. In my research, I found out that the project can integrate the PVA (Polyvinyl Acetate) glue accessible in workshops, Epoxy resin available in two packs, and Polyurethane glue available at Bunnings Warehouse.
