Eternal Atake is a hip-hop album produced by an artist popularly known by his stage name, Lil Uzi Vert. Liz Uzi Vert whose real name is Symere Bysil Woods is an American hip-hop rapper, singer and celebrated songwriter (Seyffert et al., 2017). Lil Uzi was born in 1994 and grew up in Philadelphia. He started his career in 2010 producing an album called Luv Is Rage that heightened his popularity. Eternal Atake is the second album by Lil Uzi released in early March 2020. Perhaps the album received a lot of sensation since fans had hoped from a previous release based on Liz Uzi social media post (Jenkins, 2020). However, the album release took over two years finally appearing with eighteen songs. This essay reviews the album Eternal Atake by the artist Lil Uzi.
After the initial social media post that read “Eternal Atake” where Eternal means forever and Atake translated to 2 overtake. The translation of the albums name made people think it has a hidden meaning. With over two year wait, the album release shocked many since people’s wait was long overdue. This album possesses the genre of hip-hop, which is a trademark of most African-American young people. For instance, when one listens to the song Bigger than Life, the song is replete with strong poetic rhyming words that Uzi raps as he sings. The element of rapping which is synonymous with the hip-hop music appear in the line “I done made so many millions Ain’t nothing to think about”. The style of rapping also appears in other songs like Chrome Heart Tags and Homecoming, among others (Vert, 2020).
When a listener goes through all the songs of the album, one notices how this genre of music fits into the traditional punk rock music. An analysis of the tone of the musical instruments reveals a loud high energy tone typical of rock music. Perhaps this is the norm with the current hip-hop music adopting some of the rock styles. The style mainly resonates in the song Futsal Shuffle. Another element of the album that has some similarities to rock music is the aesthetic. Most of the people believe rock music is for psychotic people – hence, looking at the themes presented in this album, it feels like out of this world. However, the rest of the style of singing entirely varies from rock music.
In a social standpoint, the song exposes a lot of technological advancements which brings out the essence of quality and class. For instance, when listening to the song Bigger than Life, the background music instrument is of high quality (Vert, 2020). Moreover, when one connects the message of the song Bigger than Life, it is clear that the song harms society. The song brings out some sexual connotations that deem the value of a woman (Eze, 2020). The observation agrees with many people who believe hip-hop songs have a negative social influence on youths. On the other hand, the creative thinking of the whole album about one escaping to space inspires a lot of young people.
Although the album gets publicized on the ideology of escaping to space, the truth of the matter is, the notion is just overrated. For instance, Uzi talks about a car with a V12 engine in the song Bigger than Life. Also, the song mentions other everyday things like a diamond, girlfriend, which mostly does not represent space but mimics the earth we live (Pierre, 2020). Additionally, the high rock-like energy of the song does not bring out the aesthetic and connotation of an
individual moving to space.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Lil Uzi posted a statement on social media about releasing an album in 2018; however, the album Eternal Atake release happened in 2020. The announcement came as a surprise that overwhelmed many of the fans who wanted to hear the album. The album release is a big success since the audience received it well. It is perhaps the quality of sound, the aesthetic and the social effect that makes the project a big success. All in all, the album Eternal Atake speaks of hip-hop music that continues growing daily.
