Ambiguity refers to the concept of portraying something either in a sentence or paragraph in a manner that suggests different meanings. It is common in the everyday world and is present in the typical day to day tasks and conversations, albeit even without the notice of the speakers or even writers. The same thing is also found in written texts and narratives such as stories, poems, and musical pieces. Consider the story below.

As I rushed through my morning schedule again, I mindlessly played out the sequence of the events I had learned and exercised all night. This must probably be the hundredth time I was going through the chronology of events I had in mind. It was going to be a long day, I could see. Outside, the hummingbirds sang their joyous songs, oblivious of the troubles of the world that lay ahead and below them, just like they did every other morning when I woke up. I looked up at the mirror one more time, thinking to myself, "it surely must be a nice life, that of such a creature." Laying out the contents of my briefcase out for probably the twentieth time that morning, I went over them one by one, careful not to miss a single thing. I wasn't going to let anything stop me today.

It all had started when the head teacher declared that the minister of education was going to attend a function at the school in a weeks time. As such, there was to be a competition to give out presentations and other items as was customary in the school. Several competitors had presented their pieces over the last week, and the winners were selected to perform their works during the gracious ceremony that would be attended by among others, the senior stakeholders of the school. Some presented plays while others had musical and various art pieces. On my part, I had been chosen to give a speech on the aspects of memory in learning and everyday tasks, which I had spent the better part of the weekend memorizing and rehearsing. As I looked at myself in the mirror again, I could visualize the triumphant looks and applauses I was going to receive at that function. Straightening my tie, I looked around to check that nothing was missing, grabbed my briefcase and beaming with confidence; I knew that the last thing I was going to do was to forget the speech.

As the cab pulled into the venue, I hoped out and slowly made my way into the chairs reserved for the presenters and the day's speakers. Everyone was already seated, and the first presenters were starting out with their pieces. Quickly locating my seat, I sat down quietly observing my wold be audiences as I patiently waited for my turn. In the back of my mind, I could see already the crowd cheering to my maiden speech. Finally, It was my turn to present. Slowly but carefully, I majestically made my way to the podium, laid out my briefcase and quickly scanned the audience in readiness to give my would be award-winning speech. Opening my briefcase, I cleared my throat to capture the audience attention further. Everyone was all ears now, patiently waiting for me to start. The big screen behind me beamed loomingly with letters " THE VARIOUS ASPECTS OF MEMORY IN LEARNING AND EVERYDAY TASKS," boldly staring at the audience. In the brink of the moment, a chill ran down my spine as I stared blankly at the empty contents of my briefcase, and then back to the audience. Panick gripped, I could feel a funny feeling in my stomach creeping up as my mind ran back to the dressing table. The knees suddenly went weak as I struggled to recall anything I had written down. All I could hear, however, was the sound of the hummingbirds as I prayed for the ground to open up and swallow me. ALAS! The last thing I had done before leaving the house was to forget my speech! It surely was going to be a long day.
