Technology that has changed the world into a global village also harms the lives of persons. In Brave New World, Aldous Huxley provides to the community the repercussions of technology when employed to the greatest extent. The risk goes beyond people behaving in an inhumane manner. For the author to communicate effectively with society, he develops a futuristic world. He incorporates a clear distinction between the element of technology and science. The technology aspects mentioned include conditioning of hypnopedia, measures of extreme contraceptive and biological interventions. Advancement and exploration occur in the world state due to the application of the scientific method, while technology applies the findings of science to be more effective and efficient. Therefore, the thesis of the paper focuses on the abuse of science and technology in the Brave New World.
The author criticizes changes that occur in the field of biology (Huxley 3). The transformation pertained to human being's mass production using bokanovsky, a process that entails the exposure of eggs to Vitro, resulting in multiple buds used to clone people. From buds, the scientists developed embryos genetically in the laboratories (Huxley 4). The weakness of this type of reproduction is that family structures were absent on the reservation. The conditioning confined the infants, which denied them opportunities to have parents that play significant roles in shaping the behaviors of the babies. Therefore, the individual product from the breeding system suffers from insufficient and damaging personalities. They engage in criminal and immoral activities, which are against the society without their conscience. The author argues that the bokanovsky process demeans the existence of individuals in the community. The process renders them worthless because of mass production through genetic engineering. The loss of life will be insignificant since the replacement was not a problem (Huxley 133). Aldous Huxley brings to the reader how intelligence and social class are determined in the clones. The researchers injected a different amount of alcohol into the clones during the process of decanting. The higher the amount of alcohol, the higher the social class, as well as the intelligence quotient. Hence, the practice hinders the properties of individualistic in the community.
In the novel, society has completely mechanized all the operations, which, to some extent, eliminates the human effort, which kills creativity as well as imagination (Huxley 43). Mechanized operations substituted People's creativity, which was more effective and efficient in the performance of work. The professions available compose of mechanical processes that are repetitive. The writer states that technology dominates the activities of leisure. The primary entertainment source involves movie theatre that engages all senses that are artificially developed. The senses are absorbed from the screen display, which inhibits the players from freethinking, which deny persons the nature of being imaginary and creativeMoreover, all games integrate technology that implements advanced apparatus with low organization establishing a superficial entertainment. Huxley suggests that integration undermines the importance of being creative as a human being. The development of soma is another abuse of science and technology. The medicine existed because of advances in pharmacology. It induces a feeling of happiness to the user by driving him to the dreamland, thereby offering relief in case of negativity. The amount of dosage differs from the social class level an individual holds (Huxley 53). The drug also acted as a reward for work performed. The effect of the drug prolonged, which deceived individuals into believing it cured everything.
The author also presents the misuse of science in psychology. In the world state individuals, there is conditioning through training of subliminal as the first technique. It involved hypnopedia, which is the programming of ideas into the minds of people by use of recorded morals and values message. The message played repetitively on a loudspeaker to enhance the process (Huxley 13). The procedure limits persons in life explorations that created happiness by programming their minds. Another technique applied simulation in conditioning. The method involved babies to have negative feelings against literature, love, nature, and other expressions of an average person. It raised hatred against such feelings. The author states that simulation was harmful to the community as it denied individuals chances to express their values as well as morals.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the abuse of science and technology from Brave New World incorporates three broad categories that are biology, pharmacology, and psychology. The advanced innovation poses many limitations as far as human activities are concerned. It drains away human creativity and imagination. This abuse makes persons behave mechanically and let the systems of operation make decisions regarding their lives. Other misuses of technology are evident in the use of soma drugs, hypnopedia and simulation process in programing of the clone as well as erosion of individuality in the social class.
