Introduction

Homelessness is one of the social challenges, which is greatly misconstrued or misunderstood in society. There are societies like Salt Lake City that have solved the problem of homelessness. However, our society has a government that has put less attention on homelessness in its policies. Thus, society is obliged to collaborate and help to address the problem of homelessness. The issue of homelessness has gone insane in the society, and the homeless seen in the streets are just a small fraction of the homeless population. Society is encouraged to spend more time to be with the homeless and comfort them.

What information is presented

Homelessness makes a person's life worse and miserable. There exists a strong relationship between homelessness, mental illness, and substance abuse in society. Lacking a home causes extreme mental problems leading to drug abuse, which is a major cause of suicide and homicides. The homeless pay more to the government in terms of revenue. Lack of social support to the homeless population leads to depression, which also leads to drug and substance abuse. In some cities, the homeless face eviction in the streets. Evictions cause loss of property as the homeless will not have a place to store their items. Another point depicted is that the state has put less funding on homelessness as compared to other sectors like education.

How was the information gathered?

Much of the information discussed in the podcast was obtained from past literature like from the story of people the narrator met kike Cara. Also, information was gathered from close friends and relatives of the journalists. For instance, Sarah's mother tells her how the past had invisible homeless people. There are also articles available that have elaborated on the subject.

What is the perspective of the hosts or storytellers?

Despite homelessness being the core of the episode, Sarah is told that one should not only judge the other for being homeless but also consider the systems that led to them being homeless. The host also perceives that funding of homes was pushed to some cities as other places are neglected. Possible this could have been attributed to the rising number of homeless people. The journalists also perceive that Citizens want people out of the streets. They also feel that Americans are easily dismayed and that they should be active in finding the solution to their problems with courage.

In what ways is the episode commentary on society?

The American society is civilized and has revolutionized; thus, the access to housing by the homeless should be easy since recovering from the problems of homelessness is too costly. However, there has been a shift in culture, and governance for federal housing has reduced. The society can adopt the mentality of saving money by helping to eradicate the problem of homelessness. The society is also guided by policies that undermine the homeless people. Most of the policies have a deaf eye or seem to discriminate against the homeless in society. The medical bills for recovery from homelessness related mental problems are then supposed to be paid for the federal government.

Does the narrative have some historical and/or cultural significance?

Sarah gives a story of her mother telling her that her age, she could not see homeless people as they seemed invisible. The end of public housing and federal housing assistance has caused a rise in the number of homeless people. Like in the 1970s, the government-built houses in America, unlike in the current era. The narrative points out the importance of the government and other relevant bodies to consider past practices to curb homelessness.
