Chapter 1
Chapter 1 presents an introduction to the topic. The chapter discusses the motivation behind the development of this thesis. The chapter defines what online learning is and the various types of online learning. The chapter introduces the primary and secondary sources of investigation and the importance of using this information to this study. There is definition of primary and secondary research methods and their relevance to this study. In this aspect, both qualitative and quantitative data will be tested. The chapter analyzes a professional practice and research and their use in research. The chapter looks at disruptive innovation. Lastly, this chapter looks at the aims and objectives of the thesis which is to primarily attempt to answer research questions which helps in designing the development of the of protocol and design of study.
Chapter 2
Chapter 2 further defines what online language learning is about because it is the main topic under research. Particular emphasis is placed on the pedagogy for online language teaching and learning and there is a review of various literature concerning with an attempt to look at what other publications say concerning the research topic. This is to identify a research niche that this project fills. Similarly, the chapter looks at the various online learning technologies. The subsections for online learning technologies are computer-assisted language learning, language learning, and technologies, specific technologies for online learning which includes presentation and multimedia technologies, social networking technologies, mobile technologies and gaming, stimulation and virtual key reality technologies; and come up with a summary of the various learning technologies. Besides these tenets, the chapter looks at corpus linguistics and online language learning which vital aspects of online language learning are. The section defines and gives further details on informal learning of language and the various online technologies that is essential in education. The chapter goes further to develop the viewpoint of the effectiveness of the use of technology in language learning.
This section develops and describes the concept of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC's). It places particular emphasis on this concept by looking at the meaning of Massive Open Online Courses and analyzing MOOC learner experience. About this, the chapter describes how MOOC's are used in online language learning. Similarly, the chapter gives more information on mobile learning (mLearning) and Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL). Importantly, the chapter shows how appropriate these models are in for online language learning with a connection to the various objectives and aims of this research project. The chapter discusses the relationship between gaming and language learning: how various computer games enhance the learning of different languages. Lastly, the section looks at the connection between social networking and learning of languages. The thesis discusses these as part of the complete model which can be extended to the modeling environments.
Chapter 3
Chapter 3 describes the general approaches of methodologies that the research uses to collect data. The chapter puts much emphasis on the various aims and objectives that the methodology section aims to achieve. The chapter defines the meaning of initial classroom research. The methodology section analyzes various e-textbooks which provide secondary information for the study. The chapter develops three questionnaires which are distributed to the respondents with an objective of obtaining the critical information needed for research. The questionnaire design includes the internet as a learning tool, an evaluation sheet questionnaire for language learning activities and lastly, a questionnaire for the taxonomy of language learning activities. The chapter comes up with a conclusion which is a summary of the methodology that the thesis uses to collect the essential data regarding online language learning.
Chapter 4
Chapter 4 looks into the results obtained from the previous chapter of methodologies. The chapter begins by outlining the aims and objectives of the paper. It contains discussions on the review of classroom research and the result obtained. The results of the classroom research answer the research questions by giving details of classroom research and some aspects of future directions for extending this research topic. The chapter achieves contributions of knowledge by reviewing MOOC with a close link to online learning techniques.
The chapter discusses, describes and analyzes the results from the three questionnaires used. The questionnaires are the internet as a learning tool, evaluation sheet for language learning websites and taxonomy of language learning activities. The chapter describes the processing procedures of the methodologies and their findings. The chapter discusses the solutions derived from these questionnaires with an attempt to get more information about online language learning. Through this, the various online learning tools are outlined and discussed in details.
Besides the findings of the questionnaires, the chapter comes up with a theoretical model which discusses the internet as a learning tool. The chapter describes the implementations of the conceptual model. The model components include a context analysis of the results obtained, learner analysis, technological affordance analysis the course design, delivery, assessment, facilitation of learning, evaluation of the course and ways of improving the course. The model components look at the internet as a decision-making tool that is essential in developing a design for online language learning courses.
Chapter 5
Chapter 5 discusses the main conclusions of this research through developing a summary of the completed thesis work. The chapter discusses the way the respondents' answers research questions which gives details of future directions of the research area.
