I currently work at Mercy Hospital as an emergency department nurse. My duties include assessing and stabilizing different illnesses as well as traumas where I apply solid strategies. I also uncover medical conditions to patients and explain to patients on various ways of dealing and avoiding injuries. I am in charge of managing patient`s pain by use of relief methods and sedating them by issuing pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions. I evaluate patients` responses to medications and change their care plans while they are admitted to the hospital. My current job has made me go back to school and study more as there are various fields in nursing that I am not well equipped with for I do not have the relevant knowledge to apply when called upon to assist in the hospital. I want to be familiar with the updated content in the health industry and amass experience relating to my nursing field. Working at Mercy Hospital is a prestigious opportunity that has made realize the importance of being familiar with the most recent updates of the medical content.
My previous job was at St. Luke Hospital where I worked as a full-time emergency department nurse and a surgical nurse. I engaged in assessing the urgent and emergent health conditions by applying physiologically and technologically derived information. I was also responsible for managing patients` pain by the use of relief methods and sedating them by issuing pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions. I evaluated the patients` responses to medications and changed their care plans while they were in the hospital. My experience at St. Luke Hospital helped me discover my potential of being a certified emergency nurse because I worked as a full-time nurse in the emergency department. Though I did not participate much in delivering emergency services to the patients, I got a chance to learn a few skills from the doctors and nurses in charge of the department. Being a CEN would allow me to practice in any hospital of my choice regardless of whether the facility is a private institution or owned by the government. Having such freedom will expand my territories of offering assistance to the hospitals that require some of the urgent help for them to operate in the country. Also, there are many facilities which could benefit from me when I become a CEN. For instance, there are close to ten private and two public hospitals where I live.
I have also worked as a charge nurse in the Diversicare Healthcare where I was in charge of the department and facility in the absence of DON, ADON and the administrator. In this position, I was in charge of assessing the critically ill patients admitted to the facility, made records and submitted the findings to the physicians. I could also provide care to the critically ill patients from time to time in cases where it was necessary. I took part in the continuous quality improvement program and made sure that follow-ups occurred. I have also worked as a charge nurse in Park Manor where I participated in the supervision of admissions, transfers and made sure that the documentation processes were thoroughly done. I ensured that the residents' needs were met for a quick recovery. I responded to emergency situations and made sure that patients` enjoyed their rights when in the hospital. My job experience has introduced me to different avenues which will be of focus in the program which I intend to study in your school. Studying at Copping State University will familiarize me with different approaches that are more efficient in dealing with patients as well as treating illnesses due to the availability of competent lecturers. The institution is known for producing highly qualified medical personalities of whom some I have worked with in my career. I have had a chance to interact with them, and the experience has made me envy them and will work smart to become better than my colleagues.
I have various academic and career goals in life. For instance, one of my short-term goals includes serving as a new graduate nurse. It is a career goal that I wish to achieve shortly after completing the course in this program. Being a nurse has always motivated me to help others especially those who require my assistance. It is because I have always been surrounded by people who need medical assistance in health facilities where I have worked. Another academic goal that I would like to accomplish is to obtain my CEN by next year. Attaining a CEN will make me a certified emergency nurse with the skills and knowledge of handling patients with various emergency conditions. The conditions could include heart attacks, car accidents, strokes, gunshot wounds, drug intoxications, patients who have been raped and those with psychiatric conditions. These conditions have become rampant in our society with some even affecting children for they do not choose people depending on size, age or gender. I have noticed that most cases in the health facilities that I have been employed are related to emergency situations, and some are life threating as lead to huge loses when not acted upon. My skills in CEN program will play a considerable role in my workplace as there are few certified emergency nurses cleared to handle all types of situations in patients. Managing some of the emergency situations at my workplaces have made familiar with quick decision techniques. They will be useful in my future endeavors thus will have an ample time grasping what I will be taught at the University.
My work experiences in the different position that I have held in the hospital have motivated me to aspire to be a CEN. I feel that I can do more than what my current situation allows to do in the workplace. I believe as a CEN; I will be in a place to engage with patients from various cultures, backgrounds and even those having different disabilities. My communication skills will be enhanced hence will be able to pass information to patients and their families adequately. Working as a charge nurse in Park Manor prepared me to be a CEN as I interacted with patients and their families when organizing transfers, evaluating the patients` responses to medication and providing the needed environment for residents to recover well. I also want to obtain a DNP degree after completing my master`s studies. As a doctor of nursing practice graduate, I will have the skills to adequately implement quality improvement strategies in hospitals, apply effective risk management strategies and cost measurements. Also, I will be in a position of demonstrating practice expertise and accountability in the care and management of residents in the hospital and their families. Furthermore, students are always eager to apply what they have been taught in class in practice. It will act as a fresh start for me as I incorporate the knowledge and the skills gained from the course into the real world. My long-term goal is to obtain an DNP degree by the year 2020. I admire family nurse practitioners for the comprehensive services they offer to patients. As a family nurse practitioner, I will provide holistic care and personalized treatment to residents. I will possess the knowledge and skills of treating illnesses, counseling parents after bringing their families to the hospital and diagnosing conditions in patients. Being an FNP is an achievement that I long to accomplish before I retire for it has been my dream since childhood.
There were many institutions that I would have selected, but I chose Copping State Universities because it has the proper facilities that will facilitate my graduate studies. The school provides students with a conducive environment that is crucial to medicine-related courses. The institution is known for producing competent medical practitioners who work within my locality. The well-trained practitioners have been coached through the thorough implementation of the curriculum with the help of lecturers who are always available for consultations. I will make good use of my lecturers be in a position to access the equipped library and other online materials on the institution`s website. Being computer literate, I will be fortunate to explore different avenues offered by the school using technology. Also, the institution is among the best schools offering health-related courses. I believe after studying at Copping State University will diversify my skills and knowledge thus I will be able to play a crucial role in educating the patients. It is because I will be conversant with different fields of physiology, psychology, anatomy, and pharmacology. This and many more units taught at the university will help me establish better communication strategies and skills of interacting with patients as they are essential in passing information on health-related issues. After completing my studies, I will be able to take on crucial roles in the healthcare industry thus help in helping the society.
