Part 1: Discoveries
Dmitri Mendeleev is given the honor as the first scientist to publish the very first edition of the periodic table of elements. He even went ahead to predict the properties and providing slots in the periodic table for elements that were yet to be discovered. His first formal presentation to the Russian Chemical Society was in 1869 and the title of his presentation was, 'The dependence between the Properties of the Atomic Weights of the Elements.'
In his presentation, he aired out his discoveries. First of all, Dmitri Mendeleev stated that if the elements are arranged in accordance with the weight of their atoms, then they show a noticeable periodicity of characteristics. Furthermore, those elements which are similar in terms of their chemical properties have the weights of their atoms having nearly similar value. Dmitri went ahead in his discovery and found out that the characteristics of elements are determined by the magnitude of the weight of the atoms (Brennan 21).
Dmitri Mendeleev also discovered that the most widely diffused elements are those with small atomic weights. Again, the group arrangement of elements in the sequence of their atomic weights matches their valencies (Brennan 23).
Part 2: Ethics
A principle of Chemistry is the first book that Mendeleev wrote. It got published in 1868 and 1869 in two volumes. The first version of the periodic table was published in 1869 after presenting his work and being accepted to be meeting the required standards. This is an achievement many scientists had tried to achieve but failed.
The first edition of the periodic table stuck because Mendeleev was the first scientist to use it in the prediction of existence of elements such as germanium and gallium. He as well added more elements in the periodic table than any other scientist before him.
Mendeleev grouped the elements according to their atomic mass which he later realized that related to their chemical and physical characteristics. He even predicted the mass of the atoms of elements which were yet to be discovered, and indeed when they were discovered, they fitted in the slots he had provided. Due to his knowledge and discovery, Mendeleev was elected to be a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
Part 3: Global Influence
Dmitri Mendeleev had a huge global influence about science since he made scientists to comprehend and have a better understanding of chemistry. However, it is of importance to know that he did not only contribute to chemistry but also helped the economy of Russia. He helped Russia's economy by conducting research about the production of petroleum, coal industry and improved methods of agriculture (Ross 87).
Moreover, Dmitri Mendeleev gave an opportunity to the other fields of science, for instance, medicine, pharmaceutical and the production of plastics. Bearing the fact of his discoveries, it made it easier for other scientists to conduct further studies and make science what it is today. His impact to society is how he made chemistry to be understandable to many (Ross 88). Because of Dmitri Mendeleev, everybody globally is able to understand the periodic table of elements.
Part 4: Example
During the grouping of the elements, Mendeleev used the theory of group one elements having one electron in their outermost shell. All the group two elements have two electrons in their outermost shell. The idea replicates across all the other groups. Even the transition elements have no exception, but the general idea applies (Mendeleev 97).
For instance, the atomic number of nitrogen is seven. This atomic number depicts that the neutral nitrogen element has seven electrons. Nitrogen is based in the fifteenth column labeled as VA. This means that it has five valence electrons; two electrons in the inner orbital and the five electrons in the second orbital making them a total of seven (Mendeleev 97).
