Introduction

Career development and progression are my critical priorities since they determine my relevance in the dynamic work environment today. As a result, I immerse myself in continued learning, gaining new experiences and being involved in understanding the operations of the job environment, how to impress the potential employers, options for maneuvering upwards in the power structure of an organization, and sustained job satisfaction. I am oriented towards turning every opportunity that I get into a learning point and chance for self-improvement. This year, various vital activities have significantly shaped my perceptions and improved my competence in career development. The specific knowledge I have acquired in the ended academic year includes searching for an internship, making tailored applications, gaining quality work experience, and being introduced to aptitude testing. I also gained critical information on online personality and ability tests, interview skills, and employment fair preparation.

Searching for placement for internship involves identification of relevant institutions to send applications, screening through their specific portfolios and structures. Learning this was a significant milestone in my competency development. While there are various organizations to consider making applications at any one time, it is vital to deliberately assess not only the internal dynamics of the firms but also how impactful they can be on career development (Smith & Van Genderen, 2018). Through a conscious process, I have to weigh my personal goals against the expectations in the work environment. By doing this proactive evaluation, I ensure that the placement provides a win-win for both the organization and I. I realized the need to be careful when choosing which job to take. The ones that present the best reciprocity in terms of skill acquisition, professionalism, and service delivery would be the best suitable for career progression. It is only through this that I can gain job satisfaction (Corfield, 2009).

Another critical continuing professional development point was making sound applications that pitch expertise to the target organizations for placement (Corfield, 2009). I am always convinced that my skills, abilities, and academic background make me stand out. However, learning about the comprehensive process of recruitment enabled me to understand that it is not always enough assurance that potential employers would consider me above the rest. Therefore, I have to at all times sharpen my skills, align them with the job description, and benchmark them against the standard organizational expectations. One of my primary approaches for pitching candidacy for placement is making tailored applications (Corfield, 2009). I always have to synthesize and highlight majorly the competencies that match the philosophy, goals, mission, and vision of the target entities. While I believe that all my skills are necessary for the jobs, each employment situation has unique skills that are considered vital. Reading through my applications, I endeavor to ensure that the employer easily relates my abilities with the organizational requirements. Furthermore, it is essential to consistently update the curriculum vitae to reflect the most critical skills which are specifically relevant for the intended job (Smith & Van Genderen, 2018). An updated and well-structured curriculum vitae is job-winning and captive.

Learning about the rigor of the interview process and aptitude test provides critical insights on how to evaluate personal strengths and weaknesses, thus serving as a basis for self-improvement (Rigler, Rutherford & Quinn, 2015). They made me understand the essence of flexibility in professional growth. While my academic background emphasized significant subject areas, the aptitude test provided a practical impression on how I can integrate various skills and abilities in responding to actual situations at work. In the aptitude test, I learned the need to relate theory, methods, and concepts to real work situations. The interview and aptitude test exposed me to the complexity and dynamism of the work environment, which require cross-cutting abilities, including problem-solving, prioritization, and numerical. It also triggered me to remain updated on various developments within my line of profession. Being current on the changes in the industry provide invaluable information that improves competence. For instance, it exposes the relevance of knowing new regulations, techniques, standards, and methodologies (Rigler, Rutherford & Quinn, 2015). From this, I understood the necessity to expand my scope of information to actively gain competencies in different spheres without necessarily compromising professional focus. Through engaging in various disciplines, I avoid the potential risk of a functional silo, which is counterproductive in professional growth. Additionally, the rigorous interview process showed me the importance of clear communication, being organized, confident, emotionally intelligent, and tactful. Ideally, professional development in accounting and marketing, which are my key, requires the same personality traits as the interview process.

Employment fair preparation, which entailed gathering adequate information about the careers fair, comprehensively researching details about the companies, and observing suitable dress code and being organized, simulated to me the pertinent things to watch in professional growth (Jordan & Crews, 2013). The fundamental lesson was that employers are more pleased with someone who already has prior information about their niches, their operation strategy, culture, and goals. Therefore, it is imperative to have a clue about what the organization does so that at the time of the interview by the representatives, it is easy to relate how personal competencies fit in. Having well-informed ideas of the organization also helps to anticipate the questions that are likely to form part of the interview.

Outline of My Career Aspirations and the Plans

I intend to take the UK or international work placement in year three of my studies as a way of advanced preparation for the work environment. The internship will be critical in my plans to pursue a career in marketing or accounting. Typically, these two career paths are dynamic, which implies the need to have a different understanding of their operations within various sectors and in different geographical locations. Careers, by nature, involves solving a problem in one way or the other. Getting an international placement is an excellent prelude since it would subject me to solving problems in an entirely new context with different customs, social norms, and regulations (Curtis & Ledgerwood, 2018). Subsequently, this will not only make me adaptable nut also intellectually upbeat. I will bequeath me with new perspectives and make me think outside the box at all times. Furthermore, career practice involves interacting with people from diverse backgrounds. These can be colleagues at work or clients. Through international placement, I will become culturally aware, socially adaptable, and gain a broader outlook of how different things happen across cultures. My ability to work across cultures will become incredibly important.

To get the UK or international work placement in year three of my studies, I will identify a series of organizations to send applications. Subsequently, I will tailor my curriculum vitae and application letter to reflect my skills that match the descriptions of the designations I intended to take within each of the target organizations. Using the organizational contact details, I will send an expression of interest for an internship accompanied by the application letter and curriculum vitae for evaluation. Therefore, I will make follow-ups to know whether any actions have been taken on my applications. In the meantime, I am also considering a summer placement or part-time work experience to enhance my CV.
