Management Information Systems (MIS) is a term used to refer to a computerized database of information and data that is organized and programmed in such a manner that it can analyze data and produce regular reports to the operations and other individuals in the management panel. The main reasons for implementation of the management information systems are to offer feedback to the managers about their performance and the achievement of groups, departments and the company as a whole. The primary purpose of the management information systems is to depict the actual data against the planned results thus allowing an institution to measure its progress, goals, and track. In most organizations, the MIS receives data from various company units and departments. Moreover, some of the data is collected automatically by using computer linked check-out counters while some forms of data are keyed in at periodic intervals. Essentially, the MIS allows the user to key in other types of supplementary data at regular intervals. In the MIS, the routine reports are preprogrammed, and they run at ranges stipulated by the programmer or based on the demand.

At the beginning of my management information system course, I held various misconceptions about the discipline and the areas of study that the course will explore. Based on the definition, orientation and the simple introduction that was made when I enrolled for the course, I assumed that MIS installation would be quick and easy to install; the systems would be easily molded as an individual desired; the MIS will make everyone's life easier; the system will come pre-installed with all functionality and workflows that will be needed; and finally, I assumed that data would be pre-populated prior to being utilized. Contrary to these misconceptions I have noted that MIS is neither easy nor quick and that it is not a plug and play solution. Therefore institutions should not expect the systems to be fully functional within a short span of time. Companies that would wish to reap the benefits of MIS should invest effort, time, and capital to ensure that they achieve the success that they desire. Secondly, through my study of the MIS course, I have noted that one of the greatest regrets that customers face occurs when they reflect and adopt an installation that bends the MIS to fit the previous or existing way of working. Such systems fail because there is core workflow that connects the modules throughout the system. Therefore, when an individual tries to cheat the system, there is a likelihood of it suffering consequences somewhere along the line.

Conclusion

In my career, I will use MIS supporting infrastructures such as cloud, databases, Big Data, the procurement program, and other integrated systems such as Oracle and Microsoft Dynamic Navision to help redesign the business processes and improve efficiency. Moreover, I will use data collection techniques such as query language and display functions that are comprised in the MIS. Additionally, I will utilize elaborate MIS to assess the status of the desk-side computers that are connected to the MIS through network configurations. Finally, since many of the MIS systems can monitor and display the performance and movement of the company's stock, I will use the methods to track asset flow into and from the business, especially in chain supermarkets.
