Dear Mayor Goethals:
I, Joey, a resident of Foster City am writing this letter to express my concern on the threat that sea level rise has posed to our City, to the people and to the State of California at large. Research has lately been conducted and has indicated that sea level is rising much faster than it was predicted resulting to the continuous flooding incidences in the city. This has been a consequence of climate change. A big number of residents across the coast of California occupy the land below 3 feet above the tide line, which make it prone to flooding, hence the importance to address the issue. Sea rise results in more floods making the place unsafe for us. Floods also pose a big danger to the infrastructure.
The rise of water levels in oceans has been recorded in the recent past. The sad part is that the pace is accelerating. Temperatures are hitting record figures. This has led to the melting of the polar ice leading to the rising of the ocean levels. As a State, we should find permanent solutions to the increasing amount in the greenhouse gases released to the atmosphere as a result of increased human activities. A number of scientists contributing to a panel on climate change have stated that it is critical to cut the greenhouse gas emissions by a significant percentage, which could re-stabilize the climate. The relevant officials, therefore, through your office should ensure the greenhouse gases emissions are reduced. Being one of the residents of our city, I am sure you can address issues that may reduce the continued release of the harmful gases.
In Foster City, we need more money approvals towards raising the levees, which can help reduce the effects of flooding significantly. It is my request to see more getting done to remedy the continuous sinking of the Bay Area, which could make the situation worse than the recent New Orleans', making it a dangerous zone for residents. Your office should also facilitate education program to residents on the emerging issues on sea-level rise. The program will help in guiding the planners in the future. We expect more restriction policies from the relevant departments in your office on limiting building on the shorelines will help prevent disasters.
There is a need for your office to liaise with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to educate cities, insurance companies, home buyers and counties on flood risks. The low-lying properties at risk of tidal surges expected to increase in the coming years. Having experienced Hurricane Sandy in 2012 in New York, it is vital to prevent such incidences before they get disastrous. With the power vested to your office, there is a need to ensure that FEMA updates the Bay Area flood map to prevent developers from investing in the land that is prone to floods.
To ensure that Foster City is safe for us and our children, your office should set improved national energy policies. Fossil fuels are a leading cause of greenhouse effect, and policies to minimize the use should be discussed. Fossil fuel use has caused harm to human health and degraded the environment. There is need for the government to come up with an energy system that ensures clean, reliable and renewable energy. Strong actions need to be taken to address the issues that emerge as a result of climate change.
Thank you for your commitment towards making California great!
Sincerely,
Joey
