Introduction

The name is mine is a short sentence story written by Anna Quindlen to portray her as assertive. In the article, Anna Quindlen wrote that her name belongs to her and elaborates how the name has assisted her nurture her different identities (Quindlen, 1987). According to Quindlen, some people tend to think that female's name represents what they really are. When women are single or unmarried, they use their maiden names, but when married and given different responsibility of being mothers and wives, they change their maiden names to their husband's name. However, other people have the contrary opinion that the name should remain unchanged. If we critically analyses the authors' arguments, she suggested that her name should have remained unchanged for the rest of her life.

Love is irreplaceable if a woman's name remains unchanged. According to Quindlen (1987), a clever friend of hers' finds herself in the same situation never, liked her name to me changed. She had a slight variation on her identity to resemble her family. Quindlen always honor her name as her destiny which she holds in her own hands. Quindlen says that she had never got married to anybody else before neither she had been a mother, but she thinks changing her name because of love does not affect anything in the relationship or marriage. Based on her argument, when her husband loves her, he will continue to love whether she changed her name or remained it unchanged. Quindlen believes love comes from the strong belief and family responsibility. Even though she did not even share a bank account with her husband despite the fact that they had a child, they were still going on well with one another. Therefore, Quindlen argues that love is between the couples and it has nothing to do with changing names.

The benefits of keeping name according to Quindlen is that it shows respect to the woman's parents. For instance, in China, where she was born, parents precisely give their name the kids. Her parents took time selecting names for her before she was born. They had to come with over fifty names to select the best out of it (Quindlen, 1987). According the Quindlen's Chinese culture, the names do not only identify a person, but also reflect and symbolize the family that a person belongs to. Majority of the Chinese Parents hope that their children remain with their names for their whole life.

The Quindlen was contemplative in exploring her decision, and this is reflected when she changes her tone towards the end of the article. The significance of the umbrella use of the article is to bring out the metaphor an artistic style. The umbrella also symbolizes protections, but restricts her to being part of someone else's identity while leaving her own (Quindlen, 1987). The body of the story with an anecdote where the author is on phone conversation with emergency room, crying and on the other hand answering the nurse attracts the attention of the audience. Quindlen grows to love her name when she saw it appearing at the top of the stories. But initially she hated it when she was a child and that is why she called it an urgly dog of a name. Quindlen described two types of men; the first man is a man as an individual or a person while the second man is a man who is one of her family.

Quindlen's perception about women, the women who changed their names after getting married is that she used to disrespect them but her opinion changed when she realized that she can never be a woman yet still trashing the other women at the same time. Quindlen responds to her son when she asked her about why she had different, name from other family members. Quindlen said her name meant a lot to her and she finds it very painful to change. Quindlen realized that by not vanishing under her husband umbrella, she will remain standing outside the umbrella. The article gets published in the life, 30s by the time. According to the author women get married and the men marry them. The name is mine used purposely to contain maiden name (Quindlen, 1987). Quindlen was talking to her parent that had spent several years looking for precise names for her. She wanted to communicate to her parents that the name that they gave to her meant a lot to her and it was quite special to her. Quindlen had to balance the decision of being a couple and being a member of the family by retaining her maiden name. She feels nothing is wrong with the women remaining with their maiden name for the other part of life which is marriage. She suggested that women should decide between the personal independence and personal identity.
