The availability of members at particular times has been a challenge but we have managed to ameliorate the issue through timely communication and assignment of duties. Nevertheless, we have not had major issues especially in the projects that I have participated in.

How has your organisation or you yourself, helped foster team building skills in the organisational leadership?

Considering that in Sweden the organisational goals are given priority over employee welfare in most organisations unlike in the Chinese context, I can confidently say that Huawei has worked very hard to foster team building through its initiatives that enhance employee welfare. Policies such as additional allowances for those working in hardship areas are good for the employees and the company's welfare as well.

What would you say are the difficulties in creating an innovative project team?

One of the main difficulties in creating an innovative project team is the aspect of employee availability. Considering that Huawei operates in a multicultural environment, for instance, it is rather difficult to create a project schedule that is sensitive to all cultures. Individual effort is, therefore, required.

What would you say are the difficulties in creating a process driven team?

Considering that some projects take a long time to complete, spontaneous decisions are often made along the way. Some of the decisions may disregard the minority thus making it difficult to create a fully compliant process driven team.

What methods or processes are important to foster innovation and make technology R&D investment successful?

I think the most import method or process that can foster innovation and make technology R&D investment successful is flexibility. Since the world is changing with every new day, individuals working in various organisations must be open to change so as to be able to adapt new and innovative R&D technology.

What types of skills do people need to manage or lead technology R&D projects?

People management skills are important for leading technology R&D projects. This entails efficient communication and information dissemination that can be applied in a multicultural environment such as the Huawei one at all levels of project formulation and execution.

What would you say are the aspects of good leaders in the technology R&D sector?

In the technology R&D sector, I think the main aspects of good leaders include effective communication and being understanding. This ensures that there is an efficient working relationship between the leaders and workers that enables proper execution of projects.

Have you faced any issues as a result of your workforce coming from different cultures? Can you explain in detail?

I cannot say I have faced any major issues since I am always open to change and Huawei has given me the opportunity to learn something new every day.

Can you identify the project management and team building processes that you think helped you to succeed, but would not be suitable for a different culture? (for example, if you are in China, what would not work in Sweden, and vice versa?).

What mainly helped me succeed in Huawei is the laid down policies and rules that guide my interaction with colleagues. I am, therefore, able to differentiate between work-related commitments and personal issues unlike the in the Swedish context where balancing the two was a challenge because rules are not necessarily emphasized.
