Leadership is an impact process that allows managers to ensure those they are ruling willing do what they are mandated to (Northouse,2018) The direction is the ability to interpret vision into reality. Leadership is a societal process in which a single individual impacts the behavior of others. Normative leadership is a technique used by managers when trying to decide the extent to which the team members should contribute to the decision-making process.
According to (Ma,2015), there are several normative leadership styles, and they include servant leadership style, authentic leadership, and Taoism leadership style. The one that would make them more helpful is servant leadership. Servant leadership style depicts leaders who are concerned about their followers first. Servant leaders have the following principles:
- These leaders can listen keenly to the problems facing their staff and progressively acting on the issues they face.
- These leaders deeply understand and commiserate with others in their leadership.
- Servant leadership is mostly based on persuasion and cooperation rather than dictatorship and authority. This makes to have the ability to persuade others as opposed to forcing them into submission.
- They are focused entirely on the development of people, both professionally and personally within their group.
- They endeavor to create and maintain a productive society.
Servant leadership is wholly focused on understanding the needs of employees in the organization. It also encourages them to be honest to renewal and novelty, and it helps in making performance progress in the organization. It usually focuses on how the organization goals will be achieved.
Servant leadership seeks out to shift management and personal interaction from directive and to control to a synergistic rapport between the one in command and the followers. According to the observations made by "Greenleaf," the servant leader approaches situations in the perception of service provision in the organization (Greenleaf,2018). They always pay attention to accomplishing the needs of the followers as a priority.
A servant leader always has the desire to serve his or her followers, and they are not focused on power for personal gains hence this particular normative leadership theory will be most helpful in ensuring an organization meets its goals and objectives (Greenleaf,2018). The leader may intend to share power with the followers to ensure they also grow concerning leadership qualities. They are always accountable for all the responsibilities and action they are tasked to do, and this will ensure there is active development in the organization.
Servant leadership leads to increased employee retention because this type of leader usually focuses on the challenges faced by employees, the motivation of employees which leads to job satisfaction and morale in them; hence they result in working with renewed vigor, without thinking of working somewhere else (Greenleaf,2018). This reduces the costs associated with turnover rates, and it enables the company or organization to focus on goal-oriented projects.
Servant leaders use features that help create an excellent relationship with the followers, which will help build the morale of employees and create job satisfaction in them hence this will enhance on performance. The leader is focused on developing values for her followers to allow them to participate in the accomplishment of organizational goals.
In the contemporary world, servant leadership is seen as the best form of the command in meeting the needs of an organization. The organizations led by servant leaders are often described as top performing organizations as opposed to those led through dictatorship.
Servant leadership helps in developing cultures where the followers become future servant leaders, and it is found to be connected to customer service, ingenuity, and organizational performance. Organization culture impacts trust in servant leadership. Servant leadership is linked to transformational leadership that will ensure a safe and nurturing culture that will provide flexibility for an inert environment.
As a hypothetical development servant leadership will be responsible for supplementary prospects in the hope of agreeing on a common goal of achieving goals and objectives (Winston,2018). As empirical research, it continues to be viewed as a delicate issue that needs to be implemented to ensure that the organization meets its goals and objectives.
A behavioral theory of leadership is mainly concerned about the actions and reactions of leaders and followers in a given situation and focus on specific conducts of a leader. Normative leadership theory is a leadership theory that aide's managers to decide on the extent by which it's members should participate in the decision-making process (Amin, 2018). There are several theories/ styles under it, but the primary focus will be on four leadership theories. The leaders generally tasked with providing information to his subjects about an issue, allow for feedback and suggestions before making the final decision. The leaders hold meeting sessions and obtain information and recommendations from that meeting, and he evaluates that to make the final decision (Northouse,2018). Leaders also assess the problem and make the decision based on the findings obtained. One of the leadership theory under normative leadership is contingency leadership theory, which acclaims altering the situation and not the style of leadership and shows the relationship between the leadership task and the action to be taken by the leader(Northouse,2018). The leadership theory was initially developed by "Fred Fiedler" where he stated that the effectiveness of a leader in offering the best in his leadership is based on the situation at hand. The five different leadership styles under normative leadership theory include; Autocratic (I)- The leader here solves the existing problem and makes the final decision based on the findings (Northouse,2018). Autocratic (II)- The leader gathers information from the juniors without allowing them to get involved with the final decision he or she takes. Consultative (I)- The leader disseminates the problems and comparative information with a specific group of juniors and then makes the final decision, whether the juniors provide suggestions or not (Northouse,2018). Consultative (II)- The leader receives recommendations and ideas from the juniors, after having a group meeting with them and he or she comes up with the final decision based on the discussion (Northouse,2018). Group (II)- The leader disseminates the current problem statement with a group of juniors in society and inquires for views and solutions to solve the problem (Northouse,2018).
Transformation leadership style is also encompassed under normative leadership theory; this is a type of leadership method that spurs the alteration of personalities and societal systems (Amin, 2018). While in best practicable practice, it develops valued, also optimistic modifications in those they are leading and the end goal is to develop them into future leaders, it enhances enthusiasm, drive and the performance by its followers through several mechanisms.
According to (Winston, 2018), Servant leadership style the leader put the needs of the followers first and it has related concepts that will help to broaden its relevance in normative leadership style; Stewardship- leaders are responsible for the results through teamwork and persuasion and does not support the forcing of the juniors to follow your instructions. Compulsion is another concept and states that leaders are obliged to fulfill their responsibilities effectively and efficiently to the followers. Partnership- leaders are concerned with the equitable distribution of resources among the followers to make sure there will not be those that will feel left out by their leaders(Ahmad,2015). Leaders serve with a sense of purpose, urge that is based on the mission, ideas and what he or she envisions the society to be in the future. Unselfishness or altruism is the concern for others other than oneself.
Authentic leadership style is also engraved under normative leadership style, and it states that leaders should be true to themselves and know themselves through doing a thorough self-assessment and it helps in promotion of effective leadership, which allows leaders to become more real (Ahmad,2015). It also has components that build it, and they include; Cognizance-where the leaders should be conscious and believing in their motives which will help them in knowing the strengths and weaknesses of others. Impartial - must be fulfilled through instant feedback and discouraging of ignorance in the leaders. Action- Peace and accord will help in changing or transforming the followers and Relational Positioning- seeks candidness and honesty in mutual relationships. Ethical leaders should keenly implement this type of leadership which will help them create moral followers, who will be willing to create a productive environment and through developing positive emotions while building self-efficiency.
According to (Ma,2015), Taoism is another leadership style where the leader ensures he promotes teamwork, technology and innovation, and collaboration and this means he or she should lead naturally. It takes an in-depth look on leadership and provides it implements this component to ensure it develops the personality. This kind of leadership style is most suited to leaders who are willing to control its followers in rapidly changing environments, and this helps in creating an ethical culture within the followers and it also helps in developing peace and harmony among the followers as there will be mutual interactions as they work in ensuring they achieve the societal objectives. The character of a successful leader at this point is how faithful or sincere he or she is in rendering the necessary leadership services to its followers. This type of leadership style is almost similar to the democratic form of leadership where the followers have a say in matters leadership, and the followers can influence the final decisions; also the followers can decide the leader they would like to have through voting. It aims in developing ethical followers in a society, but it must begin by the leaders themselves who must become ethical themselves.
