Introduction
In society, human beings are naturally known to be affectionate in their activities. That is whereby they appreciate the closeness they have with one another; through expressing care and being loving in their deeds. That makes life enjoyable and gives people the support they need in their day to day activities. That is the definition of love, which people yearns for, and appreciates with great value when they receive it. That is because of the convenience which it adds to life. However, love is not automatically found, as much as the individuals might need it in their lives. There are adverse conditions that love has to battle for people to enjoy it. Love is the main idea which the author, in this case, is highlighting. Through multiple figurative terms, there is a highlight of the nature of love. There are also highlights of the numerous obstacles that people face as they seek love. Through the author's use of words, there is the description of love in different situations, and what its motivations are Furthermore, there is the highlight of how love should be nurtured, despite the various adverse conditions to which it is subjective in the lives of people.
"Love should grow up like a wild iris in the fields" (Griffin 1) is the author's opening line in the poem. That is a figurative term; which highlights the hard conditions that an iris faces as it grows in the fields. There, it has no care, but left to the extreme hardships of the wild. However, it finds a way to blossom, against all the odds subjected to it, hence thriving through the adverse conditions. That is how love should be, according to the author. That is whereby, despite the unpleasant circumstances that we are exposed to, we should always find a way of seeing and expressing love. That is the nature of human beings, to struggle and find the best way of surviving through adversity, and making life worth living through showing and expressing love. "Opening a purple mouth to the rain, with not a thought to the future" (2-3), is a description of how human beings should be ready to receive love. The iris in the fields needs water so that it can grow despite the adverse conditions it is exposed to. However, if it remains closed, it will receive no water, and hence it may wither and die.
The same applies to human beings and their receipt of love. Human beings should be ready to open up and receive over. It is based on love that the welfare of human beings is improved, and there is joy, which enables people to grow in various ways. However, when an individual does not position themselves in a way that they can receive love, they are facing the danger of inner dissatisfaction. Therefore, people should open up, socialize so that they are in a convenient position to receive the love they need in life to enable them to survive and succeed socially. That is because human beings are social, and most of their growth and convenience is achieved through the help of the comfort created by love.
"Ignorant of the grass and the graveyard of leaves around, forgetting its beginning" (4-5) is the other highlight that love should be characterized by. To experience the greatness of love, one should have hope and faith that their action will enable them to receives love in sufficient portions. For example, the iris opens up, with the hope of getting adequate water to allow it to grow. That is despite the adverse conditions to which the surrounding leaves subject it. The leaves prevent it from receiving enough water. However, that does not prevent it from seeking a sufficient water supply, which enables it to grow. The same applies to human beings. Despite the various unfavorable conditions, we should always seek love, and we will find it. Love is not still found inconvenience, but may involve a great deal of effort for an individual to get the required amount of love. Therefore, people are encouraged to engage in efforts that will put them in a great position to find the love they need to thrive, just like the iris needs water.
Just like the iris gets water from an unexpected place, love can be found at any location that an individual is. "Love more often is to be found in kitchens at the dinner hour, tired out and hungry" (8-9). That is an illustration used in the poem, whereby it shows love can be found anywhere. Despite the conditions that an individual is surrounded by, there is always a possibility of individual finding love. All that an individual needs to do is to appreciate their surroundings. Furthermore, one should always be on the lookout for the possibility of finding love. That is because there are high chances that through looking around, one will find the love they are looking for and appreciate it in the long run. The example given of a home, where love can be found in the kitchen and the tables, lingering around is enough—for example, an individual view the kitchen as a place of work and struggle. There is a place where people toil to cook and bring food to the table. However, even in such a situation, there is a high possibility of finding the loved one is looking for. Therefore, we should always engage in love-seeking efforts in our lives.
"Love should grow up like a wild iris, but doesn't, it comes from the midst of everything else" (29-31). Here, the poet describes how love should be, but sadly, I am not. There is the hope that love should be full of convenience, whereby the people that need love get it or express it to other people. That is likened to the way the iris struggles and, in the long run, manages to get enough water for its growth. However, in real life, that is not the way through which love works. It is a complex process; which is filled with obstacles. Therefore, there is a need for individuals to engage in efforts that are meant to enhance their satisfaction from love. Getting sufficient measures of love is a complicated process; more than it is thought to be. However, with adequate determination, an individual is in a great position to experience great love. Therefore, we are encouraged to engage in efforts that will lead to us experiencing a great nature of love.
For the poet to enhance understanding of the message communicated through the poem by the audience, various devices are put to use. That is to create images and improve a better understanding of the concept of love that is being communicated by him. First, there is the use of multiple symbols. That is where there is an illustration of the efforts that are to be undertaken by individuals to get love through the example of the iris. The iris's struggles to get water are likened to those of individuals as they seek love. That helps highlight the efforts that people should put in to get love. Furthermore, the blossoming of the iris when it gets love is like the satisfaction an individual gains from their love. That, through symbolism, highlights the effect that love has on the welfare of an individual.
Moreover, there is the use of persona. That is whereby the poet assumes the figure of a caring individual. That is where he highlights the role that love plays in people's satisfaction with life. That shows the priority that care has through the voice of the poet. Furthermore, there is the use of tome in the poem. The tone that is present in the poem is optimistic; through the illustrations given by the poet. There is the highlight of the struggles that the iris faces as it tries to get enough water for its growth. The same is likened to human efforts as they try getting happiness for a better life. The tone in the poem is optimistic, where we are encouraged to position ourselves in such a way that it will enable us to get happiness. That is through appreciating the surroundings we have, hence getting happiness. Through the use of the above devices, plus many others, there is meaning created in the poem, which helps enhance comprehension of the message.
