Production of foodstuffs and other cash crops have contributed to the global inequality and poverty found in the world today. The inequality occurs in different forms and ways where the people that are supposed to enjoy from the farming but instead they suffer. The farmers that produce the crops are accused of being the people that are contributing significantly to the challenges facing the people. Since the farmers with huge tracks of land require human labor to tackle different work within the farm, the employees are exploited while working on the farm to produce more farm produce.
The production of the crops require a lot of energy that the employees are supposed to provide, the challenge comes in the production of the crops where the employees are paid fewer wages in comparison to the labor that they provide (Visser, 2016). The coffee markets keep on growing in the world; hence there is a demand for more coffee makes the farm owners increase their production in order to meet the demands. The employees end up being overworked for many hours and their pay either never increases or increases very slowly.
The worker working on plantations are exploited by their employers who never increase their wages despite them working for many hours on the farm (Visser, 2016). The farm workers are forced to work despite the poor wages because they have nowhere to go. The owners of the farms know that their employees are desperate at why they pay them fewer wages. The workers live in poverty where they are not able to afford many basic needs that they require. The workers live in houses that are not suitable to live in because they cannot afford better housing.
Consumers need to understand the challenges faced by the people who produce agricultural products that they consume (Helpman, 2016). The consumers need to understand that they also contribute to inequality in the world. The farming of the crops are supposed to improve the welfare of the farmers that produce the crops, but instead, they become poorer. The global pattern of inequality and poverty occur throughout the world because countries do not have laws to protect the farm workers from being exploited by their employers.
The public gains from the exploitation of people in different ways including accessing the farm produce all the time because there is cheap labor from the employees being exploited. The farm workers are paid low wages for the products to be sold at subsidized prices (Helpman, 2016). The people that work on the farms end up becoming poorer instead of climbing the financial ladder. The public and the government fails to understand that the challenges faced by farmworkers will also influence them in different ways. The inequality that happens when the farm workers are not paid good wages reduces the growth of the economy where the farmers would have contributed to government earning income through the spending of the people.
The only main way to deal with the challenges faced by employees who are overworked and paid fewer wages in coming up with a policy of minimum wage and maximum working hours. The policy will make employers treat their employee's well to avoid the consequences. The welfare of the employees needs to be implemented to avoid the challenges that they go through.
