Introduction

As a goal setter and objective-driven individual, I believe competence and performance accountability are developed through learning and gaining adequate and significant experience. I anticipate having an excellent professional network based on the current industry trends, practices and policies. Hence, the motive of conducting a mentor interview with a Foothill College director, who was my internship supervisor, working in the office of Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) is to have a better understanding on what to expect as a professional. The interview took place while at a fieldwork placement meant to boost my application skills while integrating them with the academic knowledge learnt in the classroom. The information gathered from it was crucial in ensuring that the internship's purpose of enhancing performance and responsibility in the field of social work is significantly achieved. The director responded effectively and sufficiently to my questions based on the specific areas I was interested in knowing about regarding his profession.

The following is a significant part of our dialogue regarding my objectives of the interview.

Question: How is your job position as a director in the EOPS office?

Response: I have been working in this office for the past six years after getting a promotion from an assistant director under the CARE program where I served for five years. Thus, working under these two programs for that long has created a diverse working environment where am expected to deal with people of all calibers. I can, therefore, perform my responsibilities competently as I have gained a lot of significant experience over the years.

Question: What are your primary responsibilities?

Response: My key roles are to ensure effective leadership in the administration, organization, and development of college EOPS programs and enhance the implementation and supervision of services offered to students eligible for EOPS. Also, I have to maintain effective communication with the District, the staff and other program-related agencies to ensure the provision of services and the students are supported as elaborated by the learning standards.

Question: What motivated you to work as a support programs' officer?

Response: Since my youth years, I have been a sensitive person who believes in equal and fair learning grounds where certain drawbacks do not influence students' performances. Hence, I realized that working to achieve the objectives of programs such as EOPS is one way I can use to accomplish such ambitions. I believe I can make a significant difference in a person's academic life while in this profession whereas it would be impossible if I pursued another career.

Question: How did you prepare for this profession?

Response: I went through a similar academic path as some students in this school since I was economically disadvantaged while growing up, so I had to enroll for a support program. Upon completion of my studies, I went for an internship in a particular community college where I developed the urge to follow this specific career path. I have been a guidance and counseling instructor and have been promoted severally until I reached the position of a director.

Question: Have you ever changed your career goals?

Response: No. I have always pursued the same goals since when I decided to offer my support to others the same way I got it as I struggled during my academic days.

Question: What are some of the challenges you face in this profession?

Response: Every profession has its challenges, and so it is mine. As in said earlier, this is a diverse working environment and one has to deal with people of various calibers. Thus, I have to ensure the achievement of the set goals and objectives regardless of the hostility or nature of the circumstances. It takes a lot of persistence and patience to address some issues.

Question: What advice would you give any person out there that would want to join this profession?

Response: I would encourage them to follow their dreams and not to despair or relent whenever they feel like they do not fit in or they are not equipped for the job. I started with little knowledge about what I was doing, but over the years I am proud that I chose this particular career direction. Hence, it will be a matter of being tolerant and passionate to get somewhere significant in this profession.
