Rape culture in colleges is, unfortunately, a crime that often is covered up as in many instances it comes with consequences that would not be as pleasant to the administration and the school as a whole. The case that became popularized by the media is a case that explicates some of the reasons that would drive a school that prides itself in satisfying the social norms to be inclined to hide such an atrocity (King-White, 89). Football is a sport that has garnered schools and individuals a substantial amount of money even when it is not played at a professional level. Having a person come up with allegations that could jeopardize the chances of people having such an income is an idea that may not be appealing to the management. As obnoxious, as one may perceive such a reasoning a sad reality is happening in colleges as demonstrated by James Winston case. The administration was one that was willing to let such a situation be ignored as long as they derived the best benefits that one could have perceived from James' prowess in the sport (King-White, 89). It is a decision that is understandable, but because of the need to maintain morality among the people, it is necessary that more campaigns and other strategies that could reduce the prevalence be supported and more people encouraged on the need to keep distance when in private.
Each administrative leadership has a role in ensuring that the goals that they aim to achieve are maintained and that the people who they are entrusted with are taken care of. Despite the capability and the potential, that an offender has it is only fair that the administrative tackles the incident as it appears. The fact that the administration decided to cover an offender because of the value that he held to the university is not only revolting but also unfair. One might argue that with the rise of liberal people in the university and the neoliberal politics that are not always white and black, one needs to look at the end goal of the institution (King-White, 90). It is, however, wrong and immoral for the administration to contemplate on letting a rapist on the prowl under the claims that there are people who are willing to testify against. The nonchalant way that the university handled the whole scenario is a move that is disgusting and unfair even to the world of upright sportsmen.
Arguing that accepting that there is prevalence and increased incidences of culture will be going against the word of other universities is not only irrational but also insensitive (King-White, 90). The James Winston case is an example that reflects the laxness that the accusations of rape are handled even in the broader perspective. Such cases especially those that touch on the influential people are ignored even when there is concrete evidence that would incriminate them and also warrant them to be stripped off their titles. The decision of compensating the woman 950, 000 dollars was not the only move that the campus had the option of doing (King-White, 95). The administration had the capability of starting education programs and training session that arm the women and the men against other instances of rape among themselves. The administration also needs to ensure that whenever one is accused of such crimes, they are stripped of their privileges and perhaps such cases will be reduced in the end. It is hence not okay for the administration to prioritize their interests, as it will affect the individuals in the college who will not be able to stand up for themselves.
