Introduction
Quality networking can be crucial for business operations; it is essential to have advanced cabling and other components in a business building to accommodate emerging changes in the network system. For the case of Fast Trucking Company, moving into an old office with old cabling and networking framework is likely to pose a vital network issue (Khanal, 2015). The company needs to consider renovating network components; advanced cabling would be a better solution for the company, there are several options of cabling and networking approaches today that can facilitate robust data sharing and other activities with an organization. IT solutions to be implemented should highly be considered in terms of cost, compatibility, and efficiency. In this case, the company has an already established network system; therefore, the necessary step to solve the problem is to make a few changes. This article, thus, provides recommendations for the fast-tracking company to ensure that make network system work effectively.
Recommendations
Today fast trucking companies rely on internet and network technologies to interact with customers and facilitate data sharing within the organization. Having a quality network system is vital to ensure that all these activities run as expected; nevertheless, improving the network system would help to address emerging issues in technology. If the company intends to change computer systems and increase its operations, which may result in an increased amount of data to be shared, it will be beneficial to have quality network systems such as the use of new cables such as categories 6, 7, or 8. This cable provides a significant improvement in networking; they can carry a lot of Gigabytes per second; for instance, cat-6 can transmit 10Gbps (Williams & Ware, 2019). Based on the network system in the old office, the company moved in, and here are specific recommendations:
The first problem is using thinnet coaxial cables. Coaxial cabling is one of the traditional transmission cables, using coaxial thinnet is with modern computers, and the robust data sharing involved in fast trucking companies today cannot work effectively. As a result, the company is facing this challenge with coaxial cabling. The type of cabling is inadequate because coaxial thinnet is limited to the large transmission of data and long-distance. To solve this problem, I recommend the following steps:
Replace Cables
The company should consider using Twisted-pair cables; these are the best network communication method that can be used with various types of cables. It is best for the Local Area Network; it provides several options of network topologies that a company can adopt to increase performance and avoid the current problems in their network system (Ruan et al. 2015). Twisted-pair cables have the following specifications in general
Speedtest.net- 25-50Mbps
Local file transfer- 589Mbps
Raw Bitrate Potential- over 10Gbps
Various factors determine to cable; the company should choose better cabling to implement in the old office building to accommodate all user workstations. The first thing to consider before selecting the category of Ethernet cables to select is the current bandwidth requires future bandwidth needs and network environment. Since the company is offering fast trucking services and running over 70 servers, I recommend cabling that can transmit a large amount of data per second, long distances, and that is compatible with the modern connectors. More importantly, cabling should be able to accommodate future changes.
A network that serves over 70 servers generally has large bandwidths. Cat 6 cable, therefore, would work best for the company because:
It provides high-speed data transmission (10Gbps)
It can carry 10Gbps signals through a distance of 55 meters and 1Gbps in up to 100 meters. This accessibility will help the company operate data from the server room to other work stations (Yang et al. 2018).
Compatible with RJ-45 connector- this helps to connect to modern computers and improve the network system in the organization.
When cabling exceeds the least requirements in an organization, the company can achieve higher performance without having to renovate the entire system altogether.
Installation
Improper installation is likely to cause networking problems, despite replacing coaxial cables, the facts trucking company should consider that the installation is proper and compatible with the current computer systems (Yossef, 2017). Since there several servers and employee workstations located in a different place with the building, cables with adequate support based on the distances should be installed. Some of the considerations the company must address in terms of installation includes:
- Distance between servers and workstations
- Reduce excessive bending
- Avoid installing cables too close to massive machinery site
Install LAN Monitoring Software
LAN monitoring is vital in any organization that uses this type of network. It enables network administrators to track and monitor traffic across the entire local area network. There is various software that can be used to troubleshot network experience in an organization; the company should, therefore, use the following network monitoring software tools.
PTGR monitoring tool- this is LAN monitoring software that enables users to monitor servers, workstations, and applications operating within LAN. It helps to carry out health checks of a network.
SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor- this application helps to give an overview of the entire network system of an organization. It provides full SNMP and advanced motivation tool s and filters.
